Good day hat freaks,

My grandpa gave me a hat a couple years ago.
He wore it on his wedding and never really put it on afterwards.
I'm curious what kind of brand it is, how to clean it and how much it is worth (I'm not selling it unless it's an insane amount)
The "P" "K" are his initials i belive its around 50-60 y/o

Where are you from, Ronald? I ask because a U.S. made hat most likely wouldn't have been sized 57 cm but 7-1/8 instead 50-60 years ago.

Of course, a legacy hat like this should be worn with pride. I also would like to see more close up images of the sweat logo and liner logo. By looking under the sweat band, there should be some small paper tags, they would also be clues. I wonder if this was a European hat? The small initial tags are not seen on American hat generally. Same goes for the metric size tag, only seen in American hats of a recent vintage. Welcome to the lounge Ronald, fill us in and we can give you a better idea about this hat.

Hello. This is my first post here. I’m excited about becoming a member of this seemingly distinguished group of members.

Today I unboxed my very first real quality hat. Previous to becoming enamored with fedoras I’ve worn cheap ball caps, knit caps, and neck-flapped safari caps. So, I finally bought a respectable hat after much trial and error. I first chose a Stetson “Runabout Pro” and ended up sending it back because the brim appeared to be too wide in contrast to my face shape and fairly short height/stature. So, I researched and found the Stetson “Inwood” sold quite widely, in various colors, on the Internet. I definitely wanted something with a bound edge to the brim. So the “Inwood” with the stingier brim seemed perfect for me.

I attempted to upload a photo of the “Inwood” upon unboxing. However, the file size was too large for some reason. I’m not as good with technology as I once was, so it may have been something I did wrong. Anyway, my new “Inwood” fit perfectly (size 7 3/8) and seemed more suitable for my style/taste/face shape/stature.

I would be interested to find out how Stetson comes up with their “names” for their different models. Some names seem fairly straightforward, such as: The Traveler, The Runabout, The Weekender, The Open Road, etc. However, there are others like: The Whippet or “The Inwood” (in my case) that make me wonder: What the heck is an Inwood??? If anyone has any thoughts on this for a “newbie” - I would be be very keen on reading responses.

All The Best,
MaxMan

P.S. Part of my “trial and error” of purchasing my first fedora was in losing $155 to a scam website. The good news is that my bank is investigating the incident and assured me (after shutting down my debit card) that I would eventually be credited the lost money. So, BEWARE of websites that are tricky or unheard of. In my case - the trick was by them using a .net as opposed to a .com and having a site that appeared to be legitimate. They used a large, well-known name brand, but just added the .net instead of the .com! I wish I lived closer to a city or town that has a hat shop. The closest hat shop is 80 miles away with horrific traffic and worse parking. <sigh>

Welcome! This is a great forum, but perhaps not as distinguished as you might think. I don’t know how any of the makers pick their names, but some of them are head scratchers. I enjoy a nice stingy myself, but if you follow the normal path you’ll be wanting taller/straighter crowns and wider brims before too long; they just take some getting used to.

I use the Tapatalk app and it’s very simple to post photos in the app.

Brimmed hats are addictive so beware.

Yes, welcome to The Lounge, you have learned a painful lesson in using a debit card. For online purchases, credit cards are a much safer bet. If I'm unsure of a website I will ask the vendor for their bank details and tell them that I will instruct my bank to pay the invoice charge into their's. You might still fall victim to fraud but at least they don't have all the information on your debit card.

To reduce a file size of your photos, go to the photo in the gallery that you want to reduce, right click on the picture, in the drop down menu select, edit. In the top left hand corner you should see a box that reads, resize. Click that box and you will get a smaller drop down menu. It will read Percentage, Pixels. Underneath it will read, Horizontal and under that, Vertical. The percentage should be marked with a spot in the circle, if it isn't click it. Now go to Horizontal, it will read 100. Delete that and change it to 50. Then click the cross in the red box at the top right to leave the page. You will get asked: "Save changes?" Click yes. If the picture still won't upload, repeat the process until it does.

Congrats on the hat purchase. Love to see a pic of your new hat. Wear it proudly.

Commitment to wearing the hat is first. Wear the hat and do not let it wear you. While getting comfortable wearing your new hat I suggest you watch and participate in the What Hat Are You Wearing thread (https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/what-hat-are-you-wearing-today.94860/page-153). The thread will present an enormous variety of styles, makes and models each day. Watching it over time may help influence your tastes in hats.

Best in your hat wearing adventures, Eric -

* GHT: *Wow, thank you so much for that explanation! I appreciate your effort! This is a friendly group here and I’m so glad I joined. I copied and pasted that info into a word file so that I can have it close by for my participation not only here, but elsewhere that I’ve been having issues. I definitely want to show off my new “Inwood.” And, Yes ... it was a painful lesson. The good news is that the bank said they would credit it back. The other good thing is — the lesson learned will have me being more careful and also in using a different form of payment.

Thanks again -
MaxMan

Since nobody answered this: Inwood is a neighborhood at the north end of Manhattan island. So I guess they're aiming for a sense of hip NYC-style sophistication in the name.

But it's a weird choice, because Inwood is about as funky, low-budget, and ramshackle a place as you'll find anywhere on the island. It's not an especially cool neighborhood, in either a bohemian or ritzy sense.

Agree with the odd choice of name. The hat is described by Berkley Hat (retails the hat here: https://berkeleyhat.com/inwood-stetson-fur-felt.html) as "the Inwood by Stetson is a small brimmed Chicago Retro style fur felt hat from 50+ years ago that's making a comeback. Brim size 1 3/4 inches." Chicago stingy with a New York name....puzzling.

I'm new to the Fedora world and wanted to know if any of the pros can point me in the direction of the best hat makers out there? Also, I stumbled across some of Nick Fouquet brand. Is it all hype for that price or is he the real deal?
