The Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville, OR was a nice surprise from my wife today. To be in the presence of the Hughes Flying Boat (some call it the "Spruce Goose", but not if you worked for Howard Hughes) I looked up the photograph of his hat on the day the aircraft flew. John Penman created a Whiskey colored replica of Hughes' hat, but I wanted a little color. My NW Hats Whippet clone in Granite was my wife's suggestion (anytime they take an interest in your hats, by all means, go with that!). Great day, didn't get a chance to meet up with Doug, but next time.

Spent the wknd hanging out at American Pickers stop not far from where I live called Hippy Toms, picking his farm full of antiques. Came home with a cool old style Japanese stone lantern for my Asian inspired garden.
The glass greenhouse was the jewel of his found buildings that he transplanted to his farm. Probably has more than a dozen structures filled with stuff. No hats worth mentioning however sad to say. But it was fun non the less .

Amongst the good food and character old town Sacramento, I made time to stop by the California Highway Patrol Academy. The center of the academy is a star shaped fountain surrounded by the names and dates of the 235 officers of the CHP who gave their lives in the line of duty. A sobering reminder.

There’s a lot I don’t care for about California, but I always appreciate the sacrifices made by our military and law enforcement officers.

The halls of the main reception area are lined with plaques with the names of all the officers who have passed through.

There is also a museum but it unfortunately closes early.

Once a day a company of the current cadets form up to polish the brass name plates of their fallen brothers and sisters who went before them.

If you’re in the Sacramento area this is definitely worth a visit. Come early if you want to go through the free museum.

We stayed a week in Venice in an apartment out of the continuous stream of tourists, despite it being mid-November and the high water two weeks earlier had discouraged most of visitors arriving in the lagoon there were more tourists of those I thought.

For us it is to return to the town that has been our capital for four hundred years

I had been missing Venexia (so we call it) for a long time, and for many years I have avoided going so as not to see the moltitude of people that populate it thinking of it as an amusement park

Venice, on the other hand, is still a city, even if the signs of its decadence frighten me

There are fewer and fewer residents and the already fragile balance of the city built on water has become increasingly precarious

The reasons are many and write them would become a treatise on sociology and economics, so I propose a series of photographs of every day Venice, little invaded by tourists

It is the town that works despite being more and more difficult to live because dear readers, you have a car , a motorcycle or a bicycle, in Venice you have to have a boat

The streets are the canals and the "vaporetti", buses to perform any operation

One morning I got on the line that stops at the main hospital and I found a series of elderly ladies and gentlemen in wheelchairs with the carers in a windy morning on the lagoon, what to say more? If not that the population of Venice is very old
This is our narrow "road" where the house is. It is in the most "Venetian" and normal district (sestiere) of the city because it is outside the main tourist routes.

The city, however, still has forces that keep it alive.
There will be a second episode

I am from Acapulco, Daniele, and I remember that when I lived there as a boy Acapulqueños that could afford to do so left the city during heavy tourist influx periods. They disliked the tourists, although most of Acapulco's economy depends on tourism. Does Venice's economy depend heavily on tourism as well?

Venezia, being a unique city for its history, art and particular construction and ancient wealth, depends at the moment only from tourism and to a minimum part from the bureaucracy being the capital of the Veneto region. For at least four hundred years Venice has been the gateway to Europe with the east for most of its businesses, accumulating an extraordinary economic power. History has changed its role and has increasingly become a tourist city that is increasingly struggling to contain an invasion of 25 million people per year!

Venezia means for me the visit of places that I particularly like in the lagoon

The small islands north of the city are among my favorites.

The trip by public boat (vaporetto) started in the main "street" of Cannaregio, where we lived
Torcello is a not so populated, it is a little island (maybe ten inhabitants), the northest one in the lagoon

This is the main road to reach the very anciente church, below another secondary road

Torcello has a magnificent church

where there are a number of particular mosaics dating back to about a thousand years ago and some sights on the "laguna" that sometimes seems a marsh

Burano always deserve a visit and, never like this time, I saw the changes in this place, until a few years ago extremely poor. It is a small fishing village where you can taste the specialties of a cuisine consisting mainly of fishing in the lagoon

There are also vegetable gardens where artichokes and even vines are grown in the middle of the sea

The visit, by land, ends at the vaporetto stop in the small island of Mazzorbo

To get there we made three boat changes, but it's the beauty of the lagoon.

On the way back we admired one of the fantastic sunsets over Venezia

Brent it is true, but here the only factor to find locations with not so much tourists is November

During springtime and summer the lagoon islands are the same as Venezia.
I can say we were lucky!

Great to see and read Daniele... thank you. I have fond memories of Venezia since my first visit there in 1972, including a magical day on Torcello in which one could find some Byzantine solitude away from the crowds back then. Thanks Alan for the report. I looked closely at the photos of Alejandro and I sent him directly the compliments of an italian photographer of architecture as well as Venetian from the land (tera ferma). His photographs of the Venetian churches is a series really well done and far from the thousand artifices that every photo of Venice now contains.

Third and last episode on Venezia

The Serenissima is also a living city, despite the many problems that afflict it

I took some pictures on a windy and cold sunny day to show you a "normal" city on an ordinary day

I visited the new Borsalino of Venice, near the Rialto bridge. I think it is one of the most profitable shops for the "Casa di Alessandria" for the number of tourists who want to buy one of the symbols of Made in Italy during their trip to Venice. The store is in a strategic position and the number of attendants is suitable for the sultry summer clientele

Two hats hit me in the new production "Bogart" that you see in the window with a very nice short coat and the "Anello Vintage" another hat of exquisite workmanship, not pictured

The day was a little cold but some sights of Venezia are to see

As some curiosities

A gas station open 24 hours on the north side of the town
Or two lovers wathinch the lagoon

This is your truly with a French vintage moleskin cap

Saluti da Venezia with the war flag of the Serenissima fleet

Daniele; Thanks for sharing your Italy. Your pics are well curated. This is a perfect time to visit this gorgeous spot on the earth. The cool weather certainly chases away the casual visitor and allows a less impeded opportunity to walk the visually stunning aspect of this unique city. Like others I have visited Venice and cherish the memories of my late September visit in the late 90's. I am motivated to make time to take my wife to personally see the sites and experience the Italian culture. Perhaps as soon as 2019 September we shall take a trip. Thanks for sharing sir.
