Vintaged Schott Perfecto

I know i can be annoying/confusing to the uninitiated when i start going on about leather type, patterns and stitch-count, but imagine how much of a knob you have to be to tell someone: "they are so good at stitching that they achieve bad stitching/puckering on purpouse! They also cut up bits of the jacket on purpouse to make it look like it belonged to an old guy who didn't care about anything!"

I would feel like the biggest douche saying that, not sure i could do it...

But that's exactly the thing - unmatched panels aside, why does the rest of the jacket looks brand new??? It's not aged, like that Schott, it's not even crumpled up or whatever... It's a brand new jacket with belt and epaulets cut off! I don't get it!

This jacket is the end of the heritage scene. It's beyond idiotic. It's insulting.

Let me State this is ridiculous and stupid and I never would. Having said that Japan is huge on distressing leathers, cutting, changing, water treatments, dryers, we’ve all seen it and made fun of it. But it’s something they are big on. It’s their thing. If it sells it sells and good for them. It’s the price that bothers me more than anything. If you’re going to provide less jacket, and pre “damaged” how can it cost that much? Their are top tier people with great hides who sit their trying to laser stitch every stitch mark and provide long lastin beautifully tanned and finished hides. They have a great hide and finish I’m sure then they do this? Do whatever the market in Japan wants but to charge figures like that?

Passion and obsession often breed sanctimony and contempt.

Pre-distressing of clothing is not sacrilegious and the self-righteous wholesale condemnation of the practice is a bit extreme.

Lighten-up guys. These are merely personal preferences, not moral truisms.

I absolutely detest raw denim. On the other hand, jeans are my preferred garment. If pre-washed denim was not available, I would not wear jeans. According to the sanctimonious denim elitists, I am perpetrating crimes against humanity by patronizing pre-washed denim. Oh well, I am guilty of far greater transgressions that long ago ensured my one way ticket to hell, so this is merely icing on the cake. Meanwhile, I will be comfortable, unencumbered by rigid denim, as I travel the highway to hell.

I personally have no problem with well executed pre-distressing of leather. Leather is, admittedly, more difficult than other clothing to effectively pre-distress and there is more bad pre-distressing than good. Thedi appears to do it better than most. I am really impressed with Thedi's pre-distressed leathers. On the other hand, I am not a fan of the Schott in the original post.

The purchase of vintage/secondhand clothing is not dissimilar to pre-distressing. The buyer is acquiring a clothing item that comes with distressing that the buyer did not create through his/her own use. Yes, I understand the distinction that the distressing is (presumably) "real" and caused by actual wear, as opposed to pre-distressing created by the manufacturer -- at least the buyer assumes that to be the case. Regardless of how the distressing was created, the buyer is acquiring and wearing clothing that has distressing created by someone other than the buyer. Do the "I only wear distressing that I create through my own use" advocates eschew secondhand clothing?

First world problems.

Ps: My comments are not directed at that Fine Creek nonsense, nor Self Edge's comical justification.

Well said! We should all limit ourselves in wearing raw hides, like our ancesters once did! We don’t any of that modern tanning or finishing that changes the apperance of the real thing! And this is not an opinion, its a god given fact! [emoji12]
That was some fancy ha-ha footwork you did to dance around my statement and avoid debating its point, but if that was given to you by your sarcastic "god", then keep on hoofing around this: some men like their ladies blessed with all the silicone miracles of modern, to use the word you so cleverly emphasized, plastic surgery; some do not. If "vintaged" or "de-aged" falsity of any sort appeals to you, then enjoy it. To each his own; live and let live; etc.

I don't think so...at least not with leather jackets b/c often times the buyer restores and/or removes/repairs the wear inflicted by the previous owner. Certainly not always but I'd say more often than not, when it's safe to do so without damaging the item and the desired result is restoration.

I am definately one to live and let live, but do you really expect to start a debate with your dictating outings?

Best I can do is sarcasm with someone who starts a ”debate” by stating his or her opinion as a given truth on the matter in hand.

I’m not against distressing per se but I find a bit off putting the fact that you have to pay more normally (understandably I’d say given that it requires more processing) for something that it’ll just get there with time.

The schott jacket I don’t like because I wouldn’t want any jacket so distressed even if through actual wear.

"I believe that this thing is made exclusively for the most hard core Japanese cosplayers. Those guys who dress up in that 50's biker gear. And it just translates badly outside of Japan. No other explanation."
Having been to Japan many times(but FAR from an expert). As we say here "Monitor, you hit the nail on the head". steve

For me Thedi's antiquing 'wash' is just that ( color ) rather than abrasion and distressing. On some of their jackets there is slight distressing but nothing so extreme to me. I quite like it and think it adds to the uniqueness of Thedi's style among other things.

I tried on the distressed Schott today and didn't like it a bit. the distressing looks very fake. Like those sanded "wear" marks on some jeans. The distressing seemed to match the distressing that Frye is now doing on some of their shoes and boots...As @ton312 stated, "I'm sure it will be a hit at the mall" next to Hollister and A&F.

I wouldn't buy it but I don't think the Schott looks totally awful. They probably will sell plenty of them...It wont look fake to the average person......

I am a big fan of Schott jackets but that is just beyond lame, especially given the absurd price. There is nothing special about the jacket or hide, yet it is priced the same or higher than their CXL steerhide or HH offerings. Just NO.

well it might be much easier to say those lines while wearing laser cut jeans that looks like it accidentally ripped on the knee but wait the rip was smooth and cauterized beautifully... it was laser cut ooohh:eek: alien technology.

I once bought china brand PC screen that came with full size philip screwdriver...

maybe if you sell a leather jacket together with a leather grade scissor, exacto knife, and white permanent marker pen, bathroom scrubber, and used motor oil as a bundle plus one month membership of video tutorial how to tastefully "personalized" the jacket it would sell like hotcakes

throw in some chicken bones to burnish the raw cut edges yeah, it leave your beautiful jacket smell yummy like fried chicken

I was not looking to start a debate, but to simply express my opinion. I did not expect anybody to accept it as "a given truth", just as I did not expect that it would inspire resentment and sarcasm. Live and learn and re-learn.

As far as opinions go, yours is as good as mine! It was certainly not my intention to make fun of anyone’s opinions. I apparantely misunderstood the intention of your message. No hard feelings!/?

Interesting points.

But I've just found something that's actually really stupid. Like, probably the dumbest thing I've ever seen in the heritage scene.

https://www.selfedge.com/jackets-vests?product_id=2220

"This is Fine Creek Leathers' take on the classic double riders jacket with the epaulets and belt loops cut off. The way the edges of the cut off horsehide age with time is truly beautiful."

$2K for a jacket that's actually ruined. Like, ruined as in ruined. Actually ruined. Two thousand dollars. Smooth. Real smooth.

I can’t help thinking that if this exactly same jacket had Thedi logos and it would been captured better on film, that most people would have a different view on the matter.

I disagree.

Both Thedi and Eastman make their jackets to look lightly worn, like you've had the jacket a few years, not heavily distressed (like you've beaten the crap out of it for decades) like this Schott.

I purchased an Eastman that I believe (I'm still not sure) has their TimeWorn effect. Honestly, I can't really tell. The only thing that gives it away is the interior panels of leather are still pristine while the outside looks like its been worn for a few years, NOT decades and the seller said he only wore it 7 times. Of course he could have been lying, it was an eBay sale but both the interior leather and liner are like new so I'm inclined to believe it.

I've also have samples of Thedi's washed leather in a few colours and again, it just looks "not brand new" for lack of a better description and not heavily distressed.

Having said that, if anyone wants to buy something heavily distressed, while I would never do it, I can see the appeal in a way. We all know leather looks better when worn but a lot of people don't want to buy decades old clothes with their associated smell and accumulated muck etc. I think most "normal" people don't bother with the details and assume if its for sale, then it must be ok....

I think it's kind of ironic that jackets that are pre-distressed to look vintage haven't had mold and love stains and other stuff added... c'mon people, authenticity!!!
