Jack, i think I said I am “generally not a fan of red boots”. I would make an exception to that for a pair of Firewalkers or the Sorrells Greg posted earlier, even though I’m well past the stage of trying to make new friends every night.

I think you are right on. It looks like the tops were tooled and stitched before all that colorful dye was applied.

One of my brothers has that same philosophy. When my wife and I celebrated our 30th anniversary he said he didn’t see what the big deal was, he had been married 30 years too. It just took him 6 wives to get there.

Hard to tell from pics but I don't see much depth of a carving to them. I've wondered if such colored tops aren't pattern stamped as flat panels, then painted? Sort of like painting between the lines?

I have a pair of those, with smooth cowhide overlays instead of lizard. I worked in a beer joint for a couple years in the early 90s, and I more than got my money's worth out of them. They're too small for me these days but I still keep 'em in the stable just to admire.

Saw these on the instagram the other day. On close inspection I'm pretty sure they're tooled panels inlaid into the shaft. I'm a fan of the heel stitching he puts on his boots.

Saw that too, HJ. Wayward stitch? Pretty much all my customs or vintage like my TL's that were stitched one row at a time have a wayward stitch or two.

Allrighty then, finally found where I need to be....
I bought 2 pairs of Acme western style boots back in the late 70's, on sale at Sy Syms for $50, one brown, one black. Wore them for years, they never broke in, my feet hurt. Finally gave up on western boots, sold them on Ebay about 10 years ago.
I also had a pair of Frye "Reindeer" stovepipes (left in above photo). They were originally that brown/orange Frye's were made in but when I bought a Sportster in 1992 I had them dyed black and put steel heel taps put on them. I used to drag my feet at speed and leave a shower of sparks at night.
Then about 7 years ago I was at a flea market in Brooklyn and picked up the pair you see second from left above. Originally the bottoms were natural python but I always felt a bit too garish for my taste. One day I need a pair of black boots for a wedding reception so I dyed them black, much better for what I needed. I have no idea of the maker of these, they are made in the USA, perhaps the circled A is Acme but don't think so. Can anyone tell from the label...
And finally, a great story...
My good friend Zeke was a mentor to me in the area's of hunting and fine shotguns, he passed away some years ago. Zeke was married when younger and then divorced and remarried. He and his first wife were on good terms. One day she's driving around an upscale neighborhood in CT and sees 2 pairs of western boot on a pile of trash to be picked up. She stops, pulls them off the pile and thinks, these may fit Zeke. They did and she gave them to him, he wore them often. After Zeke passed away I helped his second wife sell large parts of his hunting and fishing collections. One day she asked me if I wanted his 2 pairs of boots. I said if the fit me I would. I pulled them on and they fit me perfectly, none of that pain I had associated with the early Acmes.
I wore them for a few years and they finally needed new heels and sole. I was wondering were to have the work done and though to see if the maker was still in business. Turns out they are Paul Weller boots, I contacted the company and Paul's son Dave told me they were made by his dad and that entry level models were about $2500/pair!. He repaired the boots for me and hopefully they'll last me a long time.
Now I have the bug, browsing Ebay for some vintage stuff or at least pre-owned, looking for something with some carved shafts to have fun with.
