When I'm in a restaurant I'll often use this hat hanger:

I loop it through the top of the chair, clip it to the sweat or brim and let the hat hang on the back of the chair. I've even looped it through a window blind and around a wall sconce. There are many ways you can use it.

For certain dances, such as swing and tango, many men keep their hats on. It looks very stylish.:eek:fftopic: But I always wanted to know how you guys keep the hat from falling off while you move.

That superstition about hats in church is just nuts. Women were once required to wear them in church while men were required to remove them (well, still are because I will tell them to remove them as an usher).

"Nuts," eh?

"Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is just as though her head were shaved. If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head. In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God." - I Corinthians 11:3-16

...You bet.

"My John B. Stetson,
Was my only friend.
And we've stuck together
Through many a woman.

So if it's her you want,
I don't care about that.
You can have my girl
But don't touch my hat.

My mama told me:
'Son to be polite
Take your hat off
When you walk inside'...

...I wear a seven,
And you're out of order,
'Cause I can tell from here
You're a seven and a quarter."

Another diddy for you by Chris Ledoux

Well there's always been groups of people who couldn't see eye
to eye...an' I always thought if they'd get the chance to sit down and
talk face to face they'd see we all have a lot in common....

Well I was sittin' at a coffee shop, just havin' a cup to pass the time.
Swappin' some stories with this ole cowboy friend of mine.
When some motor-cycler riders started snickerin' in the back.
Started pokin' fun at my friend hat.
One ole boy said hey Tex, where'd you park your horse.
Now my friend just pulled his hat down low, but they couldn't be ignored.
One husky fella said, I think I'll rip that hat right off your head.
That's when my friend turned around, and this is what he said...
You'll ride a black tornado, 'cross the western sky.
Rope an ole blue northern, and milk it til it's dry.
Bull dawg the Mississippi, and pin her ears down flat...
Long before you take this cowboys hat...
Now partner, this ole hat is better left alone,
See it used to be my daddy's, but last year he passed on.
My nephew skinned the Rattler, that makes up this ole hatband.
But back in '69 he died in Viet-Nam.
Now the eagle feather was given to me by an ole Indian friend of mine,
But someone ran him down, somewheres 'round that Arizona line.
And a real special lady gave me this hat pin.
And I don't know if I'll ever see her again.
You'll ride a black tornado, 'cross the western sky.
Rope an ole blue northern, and milk it til it's dry.
Bull dawg the Mississippi, and pin her ears down flat...
Long before you take this cowboys hat...
Now if you leather jacket means to you what this hat means to me.
Then I guess we understand each other, and we'll just let it be.
But if you still think it's funny, well man, you've got my back up against the wall.
But if you touch my hat, you'll have to fight us all...
Well, right then I caught a little sadness in the gang leaders eyes.
And he turned back t'wards the others and they all just sorta shuffled on outside.
But when my friend turned back t'wards me, well I noticed his old hat brim.
Well it was turned up, in a big ole Texas Grin!
You'll ride a black ocross the western skies,
Rope an ole blue northern, and milk it 'til it's dry.
Bull dawg the Mississippi and pin her ears down flat,
Long before you touch this cowboy's hat...

Gentlemen, remove your hats.

As a Professor in a small liberal arts college, I take very seriously my responsibility to help my students develop the skills to be successful. One of these skills is to not just know etiquette, but to be at ease with it. Confidence and poise requires practice, and thus I insist that they practice etiquette in my presence. My male students know they must always remove their hats upon entering my classrooms and laboratories.

Later in their life, they may choose to defy social custom in certain situations. But it is knowledge and practice that gives them that choice; they may flaunt the rules, or follow them with aplomb.

You can imagine the ‘shock and awe’ that occurs when I announce this on the first day of classes. There are gasps, jaws drop, glances are exchanged and eyes roll. Some contemplate rebellion, but they soon learn that they have no choice in the matter. And yes, well before the first examination they are all doffing their hats at my door, without a thought or care.

Last week my wife and I entered a local pizza parlor and were led to a booth. Across the room, in a booth on the opposite wall, was one of my students and several of his friends…all wearing ball caps. Our eyes met, and as if by reflex, he snatched his hat from his head. Whispers were exchanged…and soon all the hats were off!

You can imagine my satisfaction.

If someone won't take up the mantle to make them act civilized then civilization will go out the window bit after bit.

I do have a few questions. Senior prom is about 4 months away. In any male time, that's quite a while. In teenage girl time, that's next week. Basically, I convinced the guys to do a "40's thing" and wear suits and some type of hat. My questions are, what is the hat etiquette with meeting a date. I know I have to take it off when I greet her, but am I allowed to put it back on for the ride to school, and should I also remove my hat to greet my friends dates? I know I should tip my hat to the deans at the door.Am I allowed to wear it into the dance while I'm dancing? Dinner hat etiquette has been well covered. Finally, are there any meanings to pin-stipes or chalk-stripes? I know a bunch of my friends are going to want them and I should probably inform them to any meanings.

I'll throw down on this because I'm a fan of The Apperntice and I was a bit taken back by that scene.

I go by this rule... if the employees are wearing hats, I keep my fedora on.

If I'm in a public place of transit such as a train station, bus station or Air port then I leave my fedora on. If it's a sports arena (Indoors Or Out) I'll keep the fedora on.

If it's a hostile enviorment like a rough establishment, it stays on.

Other wise, I take it off in people's homes and places of worship.

I urge you and the guys to do the “40’s thing” right by observing “40’s” manners and etiquette.

Your hat comes off (don’t fuss with your hair) when you enter your date’s home. It stays in your hand until you take her arm on the porch and lead her to the car. Your hat stays on during the ride to school, but you ‘tip’ your hat or remove it (depending on the length of the greeting) when you meet your friends’ dates. Your hat goes back on when the group resumes the trip to school. You should fully remove your hat when you greet the Deans at the door and you must keep it off during the entire time you are inside the school. One should never, ever, wear a hat when dancing with a lady.

A very boldly striped suit with a dark shirt and a light tie was the costume denoting a gangster in the 40s movies. Others wore bold pin stripes or chalk stripes, but always with a light shirt and a tie darker than the shirt.
