Yes, if you want to see the closest thing to what other people see, set up a video camera and tape yourself wearing the hat. I did this with several of my hats, just to see how my hats really looked on my head. And the answer is much better than the mirror or a photo.

Hello friends,

I have just become the happy and proud owner of a Stetson carson. Like many people who have posted before, it is not exactly right for me in stock form, and I need some advice/help in getting the right look. I specifically want to get the look Raylan had in season 6. Is it worth trimming and reshaping the brim to achieve that? If so, does anyone have any ideas as to how, and what the brim should be cut to? My carson has a 4 inch bring currently.

The smaller of the two will cut off 1/8" at a time.

As far as "worth it" that's really up to you. The Knudsen will probably be slightly better than an off the rack Stetson in terms of felt quality.

Thanks! I just got off the phone with Knudsen, and they did confirm for me that for the money I am looking to spend, it is a Stetson carson they modify, so quality will be the same. I guess I’m just nervous about cutting an almost $300 hat and potentially ruining it.

Coincidentally, I had a delivery two blocks away from Golden Gate Western Wear, so I dropped in. Probably just after you called!

I only admired it from across the counter, though. I do like my Knudsen/Stetson Boss of the Plains if that's any help.

If anyone watched Conan with Tim on it the other night, he plugged Baron hats as the maker for a lot of his hats he’s done in the past, and his personal hats

I recently purchased the RG from Baron. I went for the top of the range 100x Beaver and it came in at US $1,100. I have a number of bespoke hats around that price range so I know what standard to expect. This one is right up there with the best of them - it might replace my handmade Smithbilt Cattleman as my favourite.

Wish I had known you were going to stop in Jared. I would have asked you to check stock on a 7-5/8 BOP. My old IOS will no longer support & run their website.

Great video. A couple of things to note. In the early scenes where the buckle switches sides, if he had the hat on backwards the actual buckle would also be reversed. There’s a scene in season 4, Episode 13 (Ghosts) where Raylan gets into the ambulance with Winona and takes his hat off. You can very clearly see the Baron logo inside the hat. I’m pretty sure they used the Stetson at the end of the gunfight scene because they didn’t want to put a hole in the Baron hat because they still needed it for filming / reshoots.

There were a few comments that seemed a little off. One being I don’t think that model was available back when the show was on TV. The other being the 4” brim. Looks good on the YouTube guy, but he is a larger man that Timothy. I am sure Timothy’s hat is a max of 3.5” but as he is skinny as all hell the hat looks abou the same for proportions.

I had Baron make me one of these hats a couple of years ago and my hat size is smaller than Timothy’s. They recommended I go for a brim size of just a little less than the 3.5” which they confirmed was the size of the original.

A follow-up to the recent YouTube video that was posted about the Justified hat can be found below. Someone who worked in the wardrobe department of Justified provided the YouTube channel with precise information about the hats they used. It also has additional information about Baron Hats. This fedora was made by Nick Fouquet.
I have tried to search, but I am not sure what hat will be used in City Primeval.
The fedora was more in keeping with what Elmore Leonard envisioned that Raylan wore.
He never liked the hat that was in the series.
