I was just re-reading the "Celebrities You've Met" thread and I realize that there's another side to that coin. So I'm asking who's the ONE person you'd give anything (within reason) to have dinner with. I say living or dead because... well... I'm the OP and I wants it that way! (Dagnabit!) I'm limiting it to ONE person because knowing you lot some of you could fill a phone book with folks you admire sooooo... I'm puttin' the squeeze on. So let see who's top of your who's who!

I'm not much of a cult of personality person, so I don't have many "idols;" however, there are several people I would find very interesting. Since we are supposed to limit it to one, I'll go with my gut and say Frank Zappa. Not only am I a fan of his music, he seemed to be an engaging and interesting individual, if irascible. One of the reasons I think he would be a good pick for me is that, though I agreed with him on many of his political and social opinions, we fell solidly on opposite sides of the solutions and political fence. Having a discussion with someone like that, and exploring their path, would be a good learning experience.

But still, my first reaction is, "Which body part?"

One of the things that I've always admired about Malcolm -- aside from his absolute incorruptibility -- is his evolution. He was constantly questioning and reevaluating his views and his positions in comparison to his personal experiences -- and it's hard to say what he'd have taught over the course of his life if he'd lived it out. But there's one important precept he always kept at the forefront of his teachings: you can't love anyone else until first you learn to love yourself. He directed this message specifically to an African-American audience, but there's truth in that point for everyone. A social structure that grinds you down and tells you that you don't amount to anything is something you've got to reject if you want to be a healthy human being.

In his own way he taught the same message of radical self-acceptance that Fred Rogers did, and I think the two of them would have actually found they had a lot in common. Two of the greatest figures of the 20th Century.

It would depend on which body part, but I would pick Adolph Hitler. I would like to look him in the eye and see what pure evil looks like. The man who was responsible for the deaths of more human beings in the middle of the 20th century than anyone else in the history of the world. *

* Many say Stalin and Chairman Mao were more deadly, but my vote goes to Hitler. His crimes against humanity occurred mostly in Europe and Great Britain which are closer and better known than the distant lands of Russia (about 40% of which lies in Eastern Europe) and China which are more than a bit mysterious to most westerners.

Hmmm well my first inclination was to let the respondents choose but I fear too many would be welching out with pinky toes and sech. I guess I'd have to set up a blue ribbon panel to assess the proper payment for each person requested. The bigger the get... da higher the price... get me? But nothing life threating.. maybe life altering but you'll live.
