That is a bit of a head scratcher. It’s no kind of “business hat” as I know them. Despite the bound and curled brim I don’t think I’d call it a Homburg either. Maybe some sort of outdoorsy hat? I’m looking forward to seeing what it looks like being worn. Interesting “ribbon” treatment, but not my style. Unusual hats are cool and I would have bought it if it was in my size.

For what it's worth, I don't necessarily have a bucket list per se, but if I did, owning some sort of Indy hat would be on that list. At this point, I don't really see myself shelling out the money for a HJ. I'm currently commissioning a hat with Rick at Phoenix Hats to craft something up to my liking. If some form of authenticity isn't that important to you owning an Indy, I'd highly recommend going the custom route. You can get a 100% beaver hat for a much lower price than that of HJ, Penman or Adventurebuilt.

I remember Eddie Bauer selling sporting goods from when I was a pup and I will be 59 on the 21st
I thought it looked like a Homburg after reading threads here stating that a Homburg was basically a bound and severely curled brim with or without dents in the crown.

I have googled it and did not find much information other than a few Pics calling it a Stetson Eddie Bauer DerringerNeither. It's what's known as a Stetson Eddie Bauer hat. Google it.
Maybe my Googlefoo is lacking but I cant really find the starting and ending dates of manufacture either.
Been Googling for about 3 hours !

I wouldn't get too wrapped around the axle about the nomenclature. Derringer is likely the model name. The style is more of a curled brim western.

My guess is it's just a cheap model stetson made especially for the Eddie Bauer clothing outlet probably in the 80's or early 90's. It isn't a particular style, more a hybrid, presumably to appeal to the largest number of customers. If you're hoping that this hat is in some way special or are hoping to find detailed information about it you may be disapointed. You might get lucky consulting old Eddie Bauer online catalogs.

^^^^^ The Stetson "Eddie Bauer" Derringer was for sure around in '73 and '74 (beyond that I don't know). I have the straw version (which I've reshaped a bit).

Seeing that the size tag only has imperial units and not the combination imperial/metric, I’d definitely say it’s older than the 1980s.

This would be pre-internet days & the hats were probably for the home market. The rather cheap sweatband does look very 80's. Looking around though I have seen some earlier models, supposedly from the 70's that had far superior brown sweatbands. Still only 3X's though.

There is an EB Stetson in my area as well and, as you, I was initially interested but finding little to support it collectability and/or vintage status, I've not attempted to buy it. Certainly if it looks good on you then it is a great hat. Enjoy!

^^^it’s not that it’s a bad hat. It’s just not a great hat. It gets easy to expect hats to all be this and that but the reality is there are more “regular” hats out there than there are gems. It’s all relative. If the price is right, this one is a good deal. I wish they were all gems, but then where would all the fun be?
Ps: i have a Eddie Bauer Stetson Sovereign. It is what it is...a good hat, just not a great hat.

I have a question and the answers will be subjective. What straw hat feels the best in the hand? I'm looking at straw hats for daily working around the yard this upcoming summer and I'm learning that straw isn't straw isn't straw. Instead, a straw hat might be hemp coated in resin. A straw hat might be polysomethingorother that I suspect feels like a plastic water bottle. Straw might actually be straw if it's a $300 hat from Ecuador or a $15 hat from a truck stop. I'm not referring to 'hand' as one might refer to a fur felt, but simply which material in a 'straw' hat today feels the best to pick up and handle in your hand?

I’ve searched around but I have not been able to find an answer for summer felt hats. I know looking at old pictures I think for the most part felt fedoras were worn year round. Is there different weight felts for summer? I have a decent collection of straw hats but I’d like a nice year round felt. I have a couple of lower end wool felt fedoras but I can’t imagine wearing them in the summer. I’m thinking my best bet might be Akubra but any advice would be greatly appreciated.
