I've posted a few gas stations from around where I live in this thread, and that has turned into a project to document these and use them as inspiration for decorating my garage with locally themed petroliana and roadside Americana. This is my latest discovery--a 1959 appraisal photo showing the remains of a much older gas pump, still topped with a Cities Service "Koolmotor" high-test globe shaped like a clover leaf (it was green, too). I'm not sure where in my immediate area there was a Cities Service, but there's a Citgo across the street from where I work, so maybe it came from there.

There were only slots between the truck
and the pavement.

To create an implication of purity and cleanliness? You'd have to be awful selective as to which station you stopped at if you were dressed like that.
