Sorry if I misunderstood you, my friend. I really read that the wrong way. Yet, The line of philosophical conversation that ensued was worthwhile, I thought, exploring some of what we do.

It's been a wild 24 hours. Passed on a brown Stetson Royal Deluxe St. Regis homburg only to watch it sell for half of what they normally seem to go for. Decided not to bid since I had a few other irons in the fire, and I'm also really starting to dig the Brodt's that I picked up last month. Still, tough pill to swallow after seeing the final winning bid.

Wallowed in my sorrows for less than an hour before fortune smiled down on me. A brown door closed and a grey door opened. Originally made an offer on the new listing but caved 30 minutes later and clicked BIN:

This will provide balance to my small but growing collection: black, brown, and now grey homburgs.

Went to sleep happy with this nice fortuitous consolation but knew the bigger prizes were yet to come. Anticipation grew throughout the day, and culminated with another win earlier this evening:

So two hats in a day! I know, not that big of a deal to all the venerable sharks, er...I mean gentlemen, on here. For me, however, this qualifies as a hot streak so please forgive my enthusiasm. I still have a couple more leads, including an unconventional one, that should play out over the next few days so hopefully the ride continues.

Also, I would like to say thank you to everyone on here that contributes to this forum. The collective knowledge that is shared and that can be found is truly amazing. I have thoroughly enjoyed taking up this newfound hobby, and both past and present members are a large part of the reason why. I know that (most of) my hats may not be as rare or as nice or as popular as the majority of those that are posted, but that's OK with me. These hats still have a good story to tell and deserve to live on and serve a useful purpose. I am more than happy to be their temporary caretaker. Hopefully I have conducted myself honorably and maybe even made some valuable contributions to this wonderful group as well. So again, thanks TFL.

If a 1940's Stetson 3X is not thought to be rare then why buy a thin ribbon Western & convert it to a wide ribbon fedora forever? Why not buy a 3X fedora in your size for a faux Whippett & let the Western eventually find the buyer that would appreciate it for what it is? That's what I don't get. Why change hats like thin ribbon One-hundreds & Bankers Specials forever when you knew they weren't what you wanted when you bought them?

Why buy a hat the doesn’t exactly meet all my desired features? Because it will be what I want when I’m done!

The Stetsonian is killing me. The sweatband leaves pieces behind each time you put it on and you feel it breaking apart. Stains on ribbons don’t bother me. Kinda like patina in my mind. But I don’t think the ribbons will hold up to a good cleaning.

While the 40s Stetson XXX western thin ribbon is not rare, a whippet in those colors with a brim of 2 3/4” to 3” is. The one I wanted sold for over $700. So I could have a new one made for $325 to $380 or I can take a not rare hat from the 40s and have it converted for half the cost. The felt is better and the ribbons used are period correct. If at some point in the future I decide that I don’t want it anymore I can probably get my investment back. Same with the Stetsonian.

Each hat is a case by case situation. I have a 50s Adam homburg conversion from Scott aka bond. Scott had to replace the sweatband because it was torn and had to be replaced. He converted it to a fedora and sold it. If it would have sold higher as a homburg I’m sure he would have kept it that way.

I have a 50s whippet that is tagged 1/4 but over time has stretched out to over a 3/8. To much for shims to work. Was it stretched 60 years ago or 9 months ago? Who knows? But the sweatband is in really good condition and can be trimmed down to bring the hat back to original. Is that a good thing to do or bad? Points could be made for either case.

Rest assured I truly appreciate and respect your position and opinions.
