An easy way to tell if a S&W is built prior to 1957 is to look inside the crane area when the cylinder is open. If it is stamped Mod. xx it was made after 1957. I am a confessed junkie of old S&Ws...

Turns out my wife inherited her grandfather's Ruger Security Six (6"). It's really sweet and all but perfect--but her mother won't let her have it!
