The Office of War Information blanketed local radio stations with recorded public service announcements during much of 1943 promoting enlistment in the WAAC -- with a major selling point being that recruits would be paid exactly the same wage for the same rank as male soldiers. Not that $21 a day once a month was all that hot of a deal, but at a time when privately-run defense plants were notorious for chiseling on wages for women workers, it certainly sounded appealing to a generation of women who were sick of settling for less than their fair share.
