Hats were marketed by price as far back as there was hat marketing. Naming the hat for its price was one variation but a man knew the price of a hat by the maker and by model names too. The Royal at ten, the Royal DeLuxe at 12.50. A fine Borsalino in the 1950s was a twenty dollar hat. The Eulan Bayer Borso on eBay is a later entry.

I was thinking specifically of the 100 dollar hat... which was a fifty with a suitcase. Seems it was an American thing. I've not seen one brought to market in the USA by a European producer, though perhaps I've missed it.

"A Fifty with a suitcase". I never thought of it like that. My One Hundred Dobbs' felt is better than my Fifty's, though. I asked Ana to put both in my hands while I had my eyes closed, and I could tell which was which easily.

You now have as much experience in these exalted hats as anyone, Max... we will await your comparisons and observations. The post WWII $50 hat was a fine hat indeed. I'm not sure there was more refinement to add beyond including a suitcase.

I can't argue with this, Alan. I have a couple of each and to note differences in quality is akin to splitting hairs. Nice cases, though.
