Buzz Rickson N-1 Deck Jacket

Over the years, I have researched (aka Googled) numerous jackets and I my searches regularly produce links to this forum. Speaks volumes about the breadth of the data base here. Thus, I figured it was time to join.

I live in what is fundamentally a desert (according to a famous song, it never rains here). Yet, for reasons I cannot fully explain, and likely constitute a diagnosable psychosis, I own countless jackets, and I continue to regularly add more unnecessary outerwear to my closet. In short, I am a jacket addict (Is there a Jacket Anonymous 12 step program?). I am particularly fond of leather jackets.

My latest addition is a Buzz Rickson N-1 Deck Jacket. I wanted a well made deck jacket, but I did not want the stenciling on the front or back. I recognize that the lack of stenciling renders the jacket less authenticate (as does the black color) – so be it. I am far from an expert, but the jungle cloth exterior and alpaca lining seem stellar. I am always nervous about Japanese sizing, but I tried on a similar jacket at Self Edge and confirmed that BR’s sizing is pretty accurate (meaning I did not have to upsize).

Now I need a twenty degree drop in the weather.

Nice jacket. I'm eying one of the Pike Bros takes on it. The William Gibson jacket from Buzz are pretty cool, though. I've been tempted by the MA1 in that line. The M65s remind me of the racks and racks of overdyed-black genuine M65s I used to see in army surplus shops in Belfast back in the Eighties....

Pike Bros N-1s run pretty big. I pulled on a 38 and it swamped me, which is unusual. I'd be wary of even ordering one in a 36, my actual size.

While I have not tried on the William Gibson, I have tried both the Navy and the Khaki/Green Buzz N-1. The Navy is definitely smaller probably because the Navy is supposed to be an earlier model. I am under the impression that the William Gibson line is tighter and longer in general than the normal Buzz repros. I got this impression because the William Gibson MA-1, L-2B and CWU-45P are all called slim model and are in fact longer than the normal repros. I bought the Navy one eventually but I must say that the Real McCoy's N-1 is better in terms of quality.

I am a big fan of RMC -- I have a Buco J-100 inbound -- and I would have loved to buy the RMC N-1. Unfortunately, it has the stenciling that I do not care for. At Inspiration last weekend, I shared my distaste for the stenciling with one of the company reps at the RMC booth and, in response, he agreed with me and conceded that he pulled his RMC N-1 from the manufacturing line just before it was stenciled. If I could do that, I would likely own the navy RMC N-1 instead of the Buzz Rickson.

I think Blue in Green in NYC carries the RMC N-1 w/o stenciling

As I don't mind having the USN stenciled, I bought the normal Buzz in Navy. The McCoy's costs 50% more than my Buzz and I would much rather spend it on a leather jacket. I was however impressed by the quality of the McCoy's but then I ran into a friend last night and he was wearing the McCoy's N-1. He showed me the wear on the outer shell and I can't help but think if the materials used on the McCoy's are too fine to stand up to wear and tear. I will have a chance to do a detailed comparison tonite as some friends are bringing over the RMC N-1 and an original N-1 to dinner. Looking forward to seeing your Buco here.

The RMC N-1 carried by BiC -- MJ13109 -- has stenciling on the back. BiG does not show a photo of the back on their site, but here it is:

There are a couple of other deck jackets available without stenciling, but they have rib knit waistbands which is another deal breaker for me.

I'm now wearing a used Buzz N-1 (the regular version) in olive and it's my go to jacket in the cold/wet/windy weather we have in SE England at present.
Very practical and warm - great quality and faded stencil not too obtrusive.

I'm with you Dr. H; I've got the same olive/khaki BR N-1 and its a great jacket for the cold/windy/snowy weather we're getting here in the States. The perfect grab-and-go cold weather jacket. Top quality!

The Pike Bros Waxed N-1 is a decent jacket, that really stands out. Was only in the shop for a day before it sold. But the guy left very happy with it.

The Alpaca has been drastically improved on the PB jackets, and the jungle cloth is very good. For the price excellent jacket. No stencil inside hidden pocket.

Love your N-1, I have the Khaki one, was thinking of getting the blue but didn't care for the large lettering on the back. Great jacket!!

Hi Superfluous,

Regardings pauleway's comment about the lettering, My B-10 Buzz had a card with information that the stencils on the jacket would be removed if dry cleaned. Did you read anything like that on the care of your N-1?

I'm thinking if people do not like the lettering, they can go for a dry cleaning.

The USN doesn't look like the same stenciling as the 'flying meatball' on my old Buzz B-10, so while it would probably fade I don't think that it would disappear.

John: My N-1 came without stenciling so I doubt there were any included instructions regarding the stenciling fading (although I don't know for sure).

Just purchased a William Gibson Buzz Rickson N-1 jacket in the khaki color with brown mouton collar. It has down insulation instead of the wool/alpaca. I tried a 44 but bought a 42, slimmer and a better fit. I got it from Rodeo-Japan by way of Amazon. Great service from them, express shipping in 4 days from Japan here to Connecticut.

I’d imagine the mouton is far more comfortable in a T-shirt. I just purchased a pike bros and love it. Do you have any pics?
Edit: I thought the body was mouton as well. Either way would love to se pics! These are great jackets.
