I'm just going to say it: I'm Oreo's b*tch. I love Oreos and have tried almost every one of the overpriced "special editions" the company hawks. So, no surprise, I was going to try this one ⇩ today as I was a fan of the Double Stuff Oreo the day it came out and the Mega-Stuff one when it made its debut as well. That said, a little part of my brain - not lost to my sugar endorphins - thought this sounded silly.

I only learned about them when I moved to NYC as they are (I think) a Jewish/Russian baked good. Also, they seem to be having a "moment" right now as the foodies have discovered them as they are popping up everywhere (and being "deconstructed" and "expanded" in every way possible - at least in NYC).

In the end, they are, basically, a version of a coffee cake. I've had an almond one from a local Harlem bakery that is outstanding. It's from a bakery "incubator" that gives young bakers a chance to build a business before they have the capital to start a full bakery.

It is one of my favorite things that happen in NYC as it is an example of real multiculturalism where you have young black and hispanic bakers creating incredible Jewish/Russian babkas not because of a top-down or government do-good program, but because the bakers want to do it from a creativity and business perspective.

I first heard of babkas during the Seinfeld episode wherein he has to settle for a cinnamon babka instead of a chocolate babka. An almond babka with a cup of coffee and a plate of bacon sounds like a great way to start a Sunday morning.
