No, I'm not a sailor, but I am a baritone, for which reason I got this spiffy cap for the equivalent of 20 bucks at a hardware/maritime supply store down by the docks in town. The pipe is for show; it belonged to my grand-pappy. I don't smoke myself. But I am actually wearing tobacco-scented beard oil in this picture, as you may or may not be able to tell.

I do own other hats as well. What got me into hats was when my sister bought me a bowler for Christmas a couple years ago. It was a cheap wool felt by Major Wear, think she paid £25 for it. For the price the quality is actually excellent: real leather sweat band, and the overall shapes and curves are... well, pretty good for the price. And most people around here wouldn't know an expensive hat from a cheap one, anyway. But it did whet my appetite for a more expensive hat, so I went up a price class and bought myself a fur felt bowler from Christy's. This was in January of this year, and it's great. So great that I subsequently bought a homburg from Christy's as well. I'll do a full review of them on the Christy's thread by and by, but so far I can say that these hats do not at all fall in line with the general poopooing this company has received in the Fedora Lounge over the last few years.

I also have an Australian leather hat my parents got me as a souvenir on one of their trips down under several years ago. As I was not yet a hat person at the time, I did not take note of the brand - and I am afraid I have since misplaced it. If anyone has seen it, please give me a call.

It was time to step up to the nice hat I’d always wanted – but I knew nothing about the subject. Perusing the major hat-sellers’ fedora pages, I was overwhelmed with both the variety and the apparent similarity of the products available. One hat kept poking me in the eye. This hat did not look like a fedora to me, yet here it was appearing on virtually all the hat-sellers’ fedora pages. Of course, I’m talking about the Open Road. (Stop laughing.) Then I saw pictures of the hat on a person’s head, not just floating against a depthless background. Gorgeous! And I’m nearly certain a silver belly OR was in my grandfather’s collection.

I waded into the waters and picked-up a couple of fur felt fedoras from Hats In The Belfry last April. These are Belfry Stetsons, from their “Handmade for Belfry” collection. They are nice-looking hats, but our Pacific Northwest rain might do them in. I kept looking.

Thanks to repeated mention in the Fedora Lounge, I stumbled upon David Morgan. The DM brick-and-mortar store is a 10-minute drive away from my workplace, and I like to go on my lunch hour. My first visit to DM yielded a sturdy Akubra Stylemaster in carbon gray, and the Stetsons got pushed to the back of the shelf.

I found the in-person hat buying experience at DM far superior to the online experience. Kind of intoxicating, trying on all those hats. And the OR was still on my mind, with the Akubra Bushman having some similarities…

A week after my Stylemaster purchase I found myself back at DM, this time fitting a Bushman in Moonstone. Jody (Jodi?) returned from the back room with several open crown Bushmen, and one with a cattleman’s crease. She explained that she had bashed the hat for the catalog photo shoot, and it had been in the back room ever since. The pre-bashed catalog hat fit me like a glove. I bought it, and it immediately became my favorite hat. (You can see my Bushman on the bottom right corner of page 16 in the Summer 2019 catalog.) 2 weeks later I went back for a Bushman in Nullarbor Tan. The good folks at DM bashed it at my direction, but later I decided to put the kettle on and give it a little more drama.

The 2 Bushmen are my “dailies” with the specific color slave to my wardrobe selection for the day. And currently in transit from Down Under is an Akubra Campdraft in silver belly. I’ll try a few different bashes, but something tells me that my memory of grandad in his OR will lead me toward another cattleman’s crease.

I know pics are a big part of contributing here, so I'll do what I can. Thanks for being such a welcoming place!
