I would ike to know all about this Stetson. Only thing on the sweatband is the Stetson logo (pictured) and an Oregon retailer. Quality/material? I also cannot read the "color" on the label under the sweatband. Style? Value? Thanks for all the help you can offer. keith1940

Absolute stellar hat Keith!!
Welcome to the lounge.
Your hat is very old and highly sought after by those of us who like Western hats. The brim binding is outstanding as is the ribbon. Heck, the entire hat is beautiful. I won’t guess age nor value but it’s an oldie and a goody! Thanks for sharing and welcome again.

That’s a nice western. The Number 1 Quality is a quality and price point designation. The Number 1 was the lowest quality designation, so not a high end hat but still very nice.

The size is very small which will impact its value if you ever decide to sell it. These bound brim medium brim width westerns are very popular and if your hat was five or six sizes bigger I’d make you an offer.

There are several threads here that you can use as references to date your hat. Price is always subjective and not something we normally comment on.

Your hat isn’t a Boss if the Plains but you can see where the Number 1 quality fits in.

Thanks everyone for the nice replies. This is my 2nd Stetson of No. 1 Quality. Since buying the first one from a friend I have watched for Stetsons in the Malls etc. and found the one discussed last week. I will continue to look for them! I will print off the "Quality Chart" provided for a reference. I am getting too old to collect much any more and my head it too big to look good in a hat so I will not be keeping them. I just enjoy the hunt for collectibles and now I can add Stetson's to the list. Thanks again, keith

If you find any vintage hats in 7 1/2, 7 5/8, or 7 3/4 I know where you might find a market for them. And no one has a head too big to look good in a hat. ;)

If you search the National Recovery Administration you will get a very tight window for the age of your hat. The ads shown above are from a later era (1950s) and the No.1 referenced was a second coming of that model. Your No.1 was a solid quality Stetson, shaped with a 52 block that is highly regarded around these parts for its straight sides with minimal taper. 7 is small size but there are a lot of cowboys here who wear it. A beautiful example that looks to be in great shape. Thanks for posting it. You might share your pictures in the Pre-1940s Stetson Western thread, where you will find other examples and more information on your find.

I hope I didn’t confuse the issue with the advertising I attached. I was just showing the quality/price order. It can be confusing understanding Stetson where a “Standard” quality hat is high-end but a “Number 1 Quality” is low end. I get confused myself all the time... I probably didn’t need to say that as it’s obvious.

You all have spoken favorably about my hat; I appreciate that. I enjoy reading the comments. I have another question: have you noticed the moth nip about half way up on the side? I am sure that detracts???? There are a couple smaller ones at the edge of the ribbon also.
alanfgag suggested posting in another area for more viewers to see, I will do that. Thanks.

You couldn't possibly confuse it further than it already is. ;^) Things changed between the 1930s and the 1950s. One of the best threads to study is the Miller-Stockman archive posted by Carouselvic. In the 1950s, the No.1 Quality was positioned price-wise between Royal and Royal DeLuxe (above) and 3x Beaver Quality (below). In the 1930s there were different choices that did not reappear after the war. No.1 quality was a standard (to confuse even further) - affordable quality that sold at a higher price than the competition. There is, of course, a thread dedicated to the No.1 Quality Stetson where you can see many photos of the pre-war and post-war markings and details.

Yep... the moth holes are evident. Detracts from wear, or from reselling the hat? That hat wears find with moth divots. I think the NRA label adds more than the moth hole detracts. But that's just my opinion.

I'm sure by now you realize there is nary a subject of interest that does not have a dozen threads devoted to it. 15,000+ topics on the hat forum alone. It always makes sense to find a good existing thread to add your questions or hat discoveries to. Cuts down clutter and saves the moderators the work of doing it for you. Thanks for sharing your No.1.

Stetson "Standard" quality is the equalvant of the "no. 1"..... Standard quality was the dress hat line......No. 1 was of course the western line....;)

What I didn’t know is that the Number 1 used to be a mid-range hat and in later incarnations it was their lowest grade. Same thing happened with “3X Beaver.”
