I don't watch the show, but I do feel fear (and loathing) when I see this ad. What a terrible hat, poorly worn. Makes me not want to watch. Sorry, had to share.

I'm going to guess that the hat was too big for the actor.
Turning is slightly sideways allowed it to sit above the actor's eyes for the photo.
The director and/or producer(s) probably thought it won't matter; no one will notice. The hat might have been a last minute addition that someone thought looked cool without realizing that it was something that needed to be sized to fit correctly.
A good costumer probably hated the idea because; of course people will notice. It's wrong!
A wise costumer hopefully chose their battles carefully and simply agreed with a sigh of exasperation. If you could see how some directors and producers dress you would realize fitment and style is beyond their comprehension and thus a dead-end argument. If it does not cost more money to do it wrong or even saves money short-term, it's still okay.
The wise costumer wins long-term as it's still another credit on the resumé.
That's what I see anyway,

I've never seen the series, but after looking at a few online photos I saw the hat wasn't turned but that the pinch appears to have been deliberately creased off-center. Perhaps a visual cue to the audience that the hat isn't the only thing askew about the character?

Fear or fun, if I saw this I would cross the street.
Wear your steampunk hat, but those 18th century wig curls are so not you.
Definitely one to be afraid of, very afraid of.
Beyond belief.
You might think that it's cool. To me it's about as cool as wearing a catheter with a drip bag.
That straw was hand woven by somebody very skilled just so that it can be unpicked and made to resemble a head dress. Gross.

I had a hat very much like that one when I was very young, a gift from my sister who said she got it in Hawaii. They're actually made that way, with the separate fronds sticking up.

There does seem to be something of a fashion for wearing hats at weird angles. I see lots of women in London wearing hats sideways or backwards.

I think it's off-center because there is always a faction that believes that doing anything requires being different than the norm. It's a characteristic of youth. Be different, and if it pisses off the elders, so much the better.
Or of course it could just be they just have no clue. haha

I've seen style guides specifically reference aggressive tilts or turning a fedora slightly to the side as the proper way to wear them.

I recently read an online history of hats in America that claimed they were worn tilted to the side until some point in the 20th century. I'll try to find it, because it had other interesting information, some that countered claims I see repeated regularly in hat commentary.
Twisted to the side, though, seems to be a modern phenomena.

Most always a hat will be canted to one side unintentionally when the wearer puts it on. The more exaggerated intentional cants range from rakish and jaunty to desperately trying too hard. As always, there is no replacement for confidence.

I think the best piece of advice I've seen is the "wear the hat, don't let it wear you". If you act like the hat is out of place, people will immediately pick up on it and agree. It should be like a pair of shoes, the most natural thing in the world to be wearing, like it would be odd to not have it on.
My favorite interaction thus far was with my buddy's 16 year old son. I walked in and he asked why I was wearing a fedora. Without missing a beat I asked him why he wasn't. He had no response and I strolled on past him as his girlfriend laughed at him.

Thanks for the greeting and the 'likes' I got from other members. I'm new here, but have been a member of other forums, mainly automotive, so know it wouldn't quite be kosher to hijack feltfan's 'Fear' thread with a long introduction. I was in my hat laboratory until 1:30 AM last night, and there are some pretty scary things things there, but I'll figure out the file upload feature another time (my daily might even make some of you feel faint). I did open the history file in my laptop and try finding the article I mentioned after climbing into bed, but the sandman kept sneaking up behind me and the peepers were on the blink. I may have to go through the history of a couple other devises, but I'll start a new thread when it turns up.
I had a scare this morning. I sat down next to the wife with cup of Joe. The morning news was on (though that isn't what I'm talking about) and we started talking about something mundane. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a dark object landed on my forearm. We locked eyes, then both looked at the ceiling. When I looked back down and picked up the object I realized it was a small pheasant feather. It must have fallen out of my hair, which means it must have been on my pillow, which suggests I've got this hat thing bad, real bad (I opened a Stetson felt safari ad in another window while I was typing this because a friend said he's partial to safaris when I came out on facebook about my efforts to teach myself hatmaking and turn it into some kind of business).
Here's something else that might provoke fear: that 'laboratory' thing, a reference to the Mad Hatter trope, via the Mad Scientist trope, is probably only the beginning of me tossing out bad puns and allusions that have likely had a lot of mileage here and become quite passe. Or should I say, old hat?

Thank you, Jackal. Duck Duck Go seemed to send me to the Lounge with almost every hat question as well. I kept finding answers too, and I was only lurking. I'd have registered sooner, but after my last two Win 7 laptops ended up telling me Windows was fake, though I know one wasn't, my present one has a moat around it. I finally joined on another machine.
