A fine looking hat, doing its job! I like it.

Just don't post this over on the leather jacket forum; there's some folks over there who might have a stroke over a leather jacket getting wet!

From sun to spring downpour, the Florentine Milan Stratoliner handles it all. A poly Milan perfect for fast changing weather.

Thank guys. Yeah Woodtroll, it's a chrome tanned, heavily waxed number that beads rain well. The beaver felt does well to. If it shrinks, just renlock it is my philosophy . So far no shrinking after several rain walks

Yep, it will be fine, I'm sure. We all obsess about different things, but some of the attitudes about how to wear and care for clothing that was essentially designed as work-wear are very different than mine. I'm glad to see jackets and hats serving their true purpose and receiving honest wear!

I really like this hat. I could use something like this with the ever changing weather in Florida. I have not had a poly hat before. Is it possible to reshape the crown or snap the brim? Nice color too.

It comes as a snap brim, but I used a lot of steam on multiple occasions to get it to stay down without a big hawks beak hanging in front there. It doesn't mold the same way felt does with steam, but it doesn't lose it's shape when it rains like a nice Panama straw would.

Stetson, Akubra, Dobbs, etc, all make poly hats.

Hemp is another good material for fast changing weather. Stetson and Peters Brothers are a couple good ones mentioned on the FL.

Ok, so you can use steam on it then, somewhat. Interesting. I have always avoided them because I have a problem of the pinch not lining up over my nose with factory pressed crowns. Next time I am in a hat shop in CT. I will check them out. I don't believe we have any real hat shops in FL. Thanks!

But the front pinch an teardrop crease is steamed in with a block/mold and steam press, so it's really in there... I wouldn't say it's very doable by hand, or at least it's going to be hard. I spent a lot of time just getting the front brim to stay down how I like it.

I wonder if heat from a hair blow dryer, gently applied, would work better than steam on a poly hat? I would think it’s the heat from the steam that’s working on re-shaping the poly, and that the moisture would have no real effect on plastic. You’d have to be gentle with it so as not to burn the surface by overheating, I would think. Steam would be safer, but I can see how it would take a lot of time to get the poly to “set” with steam. Has anyone tried this?

I think you are correct in that heat helps break the "set" of a poly factory crease in order to change it, but I think the moisture from the steam is still important for the lubricity when molding the crease of a poly. Maybe not as important when molding the crease by hand but certainly important with a factory mold/blockd crease such as Doug is talking about.

You certainly could be right about that; I will be the first to tell you I’ve never shaped a poly hat and so am just thinking out loud. I’ve been trying to decide between a hemp or poly hat for durable summer wear, but can’t find much in either material with a taller crown and a 3” or so brim.
