Johnson Leather Custom Aviator Style

Had a bit of trouble coming up with the title

This jacket was long in the making because it initially started as a completely different order. After many conversations and getting the Rin Tanaka books, we finally decided to go for this one.

If anybody is thinking of ordering a jacket form Johnson Leathers, just go ahead you are in very good hands! They can pretty much make anything and they will discuss any ideas you might have even the wildest ones and try to make something functional out of it. This jacket would have never come out as well without Alan and his team's support and feedback.

The pattern was created using the Rin Tanaka pics mainly and a few things I wanted namely a lower back so that it works in my riding position (hunched forward) and side straps instead of the laces on the original one. We went through 2 mock-ups before making the jacket.

About 9 month, we did take out time, I was in no rush, I needed to make sure the jacket would come out as good as I was hoping... and honestly it did exceed my expectations by a wide margin!

That jacket really works as a riding jacket, the sleeves are just tapered enough to fit in a glove, or if the zip is open at the tight level to fit over a glove depending on your preferences. And it is perfectly adapted for my riding position as well. It really is a jacket that combines form and function!

Cool jacket! Creating a new pattern from scratch must be quite challenging!

On a different note, every time I see a jacket from the back with a two piece sleeves I can’t help but to think how much better that looks than a three piece sleeve and wonder why a three piece is ever needed.

Excellent work from Alan and his team! If I had the choice between this one and the Freewheelers San Mateo which is very similar, I think I would go with this one, mainly because of the probably much lower price and quality of JL seems to be also quite good even if I don't have experience with JL. Enjoy wearing this unique piece of art!

very cool, I like the shape of that kidney panel and the 2 snaps to reduce the load given to the zipper box looks like a cool accent visually

The initial graining looks to be HH, but I don't think JL much works with HH?

Cool jacket btw. JL does good work, and Alan is easy to work with.

I'm a bit lost for words actually. I've never seen anything like it (clearly I don't have that Tanaka book). On my screen the colour comes across as black cherry or a dark eggplant hue. Was the original a 1930s design? It's such a unique piece and it really is a work of art. If I saw you walking down the street in it, stranger or not, I'd just walk straight up to you and congratulate you on having such an amazing jacket.

Thanks! It is indeed a 30s design

That jacket does attract attention when I wear it - both positive and negative - so at least it is doing something right

And yes, the Tanaka book is a dangerous resource!

You must have an enormous sense of, well I was going to say satisfaction but the better word, I think, is joy, at how successful the project turned out. You went out on a limb, trusted in the talents of JL to make the vision a reality, and look, what a winner! Really happy for you RD.

That is one amazing jacket. Totally stunning. I live a few blocks form the JL shop and I'm constantly shocked by the cool jackets being born there. This ranks among the best I've seen, and I've seen a bunch.
