I think Interview is a very good adaptation of the book (yeah, I read nearly all of them), with a surprisingly good performance by Cruise. He was not afraid to go big and strange in the role - which he wouldn't have done at a later stage of his career.

Cruise it not an actor I like much, however once in a blue moon you do see him take on a role where he getsto act something other than the Tom Cruise persona, and he can be very good then. One such would be Valkyrie, where he plays Von Staffenberg. I do think he wasn't so bad in Interview, though I think there re a lot of other acotrscould have done it better. Christian Slater (ironically) is one, imo.

I was (and remain) much more annoyed by the casting of Antonio Banderas, who (while a sexy dude and good actor) was definitely NOT the eternally 15-year-old "angel out of Caravaggio" that the vampire Armand is in the books. But it's a well cast and lavishly done film, and Neil Jordan did a fine job directing. (The less said about that awful film of Queen of the Damned I've been trying to forget, the better!)

I've not read the book in a very long time, but yes, I imagnied him more as a Dorian Grey type.

Twenty-five years on since Interview, and with Queen of the Damned all but forgotten, I wodner will there ever be a remake. I could see te whole sagaworking well as a Netflix type project (in the same was that HBO are working on Watchmen - different genre, but otherwise a similar notion).

I also liked Neil Jordan's recent vampire film Byzantium with Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton.

Yet to see it, but watchng out for both that and Only Lovers eft Alive on Netflix.

There's a new vampire/witch series on AMC, A Discovery of Witches. By the cast, it is more likely just new to America. It's being simulcast on BBC-America, as is Killing Eve. I watched part of the first episode and then was pulled away. I noticed actors from both Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey. I'm guessing most of those into this subject matter are aware of it, but just in case. I like the cast and production, but I doubt I'll be moving forward with it.

I've heard the name, but I don't think I've seen it anywhere. I'm out of touch with boradcast TV; wewatch everything on Netflix / Prime / catch-up now.

RE: Into the Badlands. AMC. It's funny that you mention the martial arts scenes. That's really not my bag, but it's one of my favorite parts of this show. They're outlandish. Not believable, but I feel they work perfectly within how ridiculous the rest of the show feels. I look forward to seeing what crazy, physics-defying move they'll choreograph next. There's probably an entire genre of this, but as it were, I've been looking forward to this series ending. I barely have the appetite for this show. The costumes and set design are so low budget that I almost feel for the people responsible for them. "Here's $34. See what you can do with that."

I'm beginning to enjoy it more four episodes in - as long as they don't do a Matrix. ;) It feels a bit Hunger Games to me. I quite enjoy the notion of such an ultra-violent world yet wthout firearms; I expect sooner or later that will become a major pot point.

Dark Summer is very good for those who appreciate zombies. Caveat: it does have fast zombies, for those who hate that.

Edward:

Ask and ye shall receive: an Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles series is already in development at Hulu.

And yes, remain on the lookout for Only Lovers Left Alive, an interestingly different take on vampires with a great cast.

O! Excellent, I will look forward to that. Hulu havedone an excellent job on Handmaid's Tale, so I have high hopes here.

Black Summer on Netflix. Probably the most relentlessly realistic zombie show I've seen of late. It's on thed bleak side - it makes The Walking Dead look positively jolly. Worth a look if you are for the genre.

Not much this week, but we finally got around to watching the first two episodes of this season of Game of Thrones. It is a shame that soon it will all be over.
:D
I watched the first episode because of the free week. I thought I could avoid any spoilers, but no sir. I was listening to a podcast last night, and they started talking about something that happened in episode 2 (because I know it didn't happen in episode 1). I might have to go offline until I catch up someday, but that's the problem. I don't know when I'll be able to watch again. Very frustrating.

Last few days of an Easter break, and I watched a lot of great stuff. Don't Forget the Driver with Toby Jones on the BBC was wonderful - dark and yet whimsical at the same time. Love, Death and Robots on Netflix is fun, the anthology style allowing for some really good short stories. Also, the fsct that it's not tied to a set time limit - stories vary from six minutes to thirty or so - really serves the narratives. The biggy is, of course, Line of Duty on the BBC, with BIG plot developments happening in next week's series-closer...

We started watching on DVD a few years ago, and have continued that way. At this point we're three or so seasons behind, and planhing to reach from Series one when we get time anyhow. I'm sort of resignedc to knoing the ending before we get to see it, not least as we have a friend who inists on spoilering Thrones as soon as an episode is done, then shrugging off any complaints with an"If it mattered that much ,you'd have sene it already". C'est la vie. On the plus side, I usually forget the spoilers - I sruggle to remember their names half the time so I end up callng them by things like DragonLady and such (that's the cleanest one - I've called two of the Lannisters things I won't repeat in this company...).

A Discovery of Witches. BBC-America/AMC. I ended up watching another episode. I'm not crazy about a couple of the aspects of the show, but I think I'm going to come off my earlier statement of not continuing with it. I like the characters and the story so far. The casting is very good for evil.

Rewatched episodes one and two of season eight of Game of Thrones before watching half of episode three. I was too tired to finish it. I really want to be wide awake before it all goes down. Tonight, we will pick up where we left off.

Fosse/Verdon. FX. As Doctor Strange predicted, there was no reason, I can figure either, why this had to be a full season series...other than to sell to a network. 2-3 hours would have been plenty, at least as we've seen through four episodes. We've moved little. We might get a showpiece dance scene at some point, but what has confused me even more is that we have yet to see Sam Rockwell dance. I could be very wrong about this, but I thought that would be a significant reason why he was cast in this role. Fosse was a director and choreographer, but wasn't he a dancer as well? Rockwell is very good in this role. Make no mistake, but I thought they would use more of him.

"Game of Thrones" - Season 8 Episode 3. Like some other series before there comes an episode so mindless, so stupid so poorly written, poorly shot and criminally edited that I can't bear to watch one more minute of it. They lost me in the first 5 minutes. As a military historian of sorts... and a vet I couldn't stomach it.

Your trebuchets (think massive slingshots) are placed in FRONT of your infantry.

You take the greatest most feared light cavalry your world has ever seen and launch them at an unseen enemy without support and ooh and ahh as their lighted arracks and lives are beautifully snuffed out. No flaming range markers, flaming trenches in depth so your long range weapons can fire accurately at a distance.

The majority of your forces are OUTSIDE of your castle walls!

A besieged castle with no boiling oil, flaming pitch to kill zombies that BURN?

I know it's supposed to be a fantasy show with dragons but they got the other battles (Battle of the Bastards and the Loot Train) more or less correct. So don't tell me that "Dumb and Dumber" didn't know how to stage one. The quick cuts the shakey cam the whole mess shot so dark I couldn't see a ******* thing! I was boiling, furious. Suspending disbelief is one thing condoning outright imbecility is another!

CANNOT READ GAME OF THRONES POSTS...YET!

Better Things. FX. I was once an extra on a TV movie. Learned a little there. When a show or movie captures a party, or the like, it impresses me. When filming, there's no music. There's no real ambiance. Try not to watch the dancing, because it is often a dead give away of everyone beating to their own drum. It'll throw you out of the moment right quick. I'm probably wrong about this, but actors acting and interacting with each other is one thing, but for the director and crew to create a social vibe without any of the significant physical factors in play is no small feat. This episode started with Sam and a group of her friends having a private party. It was really well done.
