Some leather comparisons for today.
First, GW russet shinki (semi-analine iirc):
Next up, Aero seal (but a more reddish-russet) Vicenza.
This particular batch of Shinki (jacket hasn't been worn as much as the Aero) has superior grain, but this Vicenza has more dynamic color. This Shinki color is relatively flat and has less of a sheen. More WWII-appropriate IMO. Both are great jackets with great leathers. Note: phone camera's HD feature was turned on. Probably slightly less dramatic than captured here in these photos.
Very oddly, both leathers smell as they look. The Shinki smells like fine, albeit modestly saccharine leather, while the Vic has overtones of cinammon. Gold medal in scent is still retained by Johnson's Horween overdye cow cxl. That was a true drug. One does not equate bovine scents with fine French wines, but the expert panel has decided.

Hey Nick, can't believe I'm saying that but... this juicy colored russet Vicenza looks more interesting in direct comparison with this particular Shinki. Shinki is also nice, but this Vicenza is the winner. It seems to sound almost unbelievable but it is how it is. Man, this your russet Vicenza is a real gem! What a purchase!

I agree! The more I wear jackets with Vicenza, the more I like it. Just about right for an A-2, and the more wear it gets, the better it looks!

Vanson Comet:
I got one of these: Vanson Dakota Barn Jacket. While not cheap, Vanson as yet doesn't charge stupid prices for a quality leather jacket.
These are meant to fit long (28 inch back in size 42) with is my preference and I got it in their medium weight Firenze which is still heavy stuff - 3oz- and the jacket weighs over 5 pounds so I may struggle to find reasons to wear it. I would say if someone is after medium weight, 2.5oz would be more appropriate.
The quality of the leather is as good as anything I have seen over 30 years but I am not one to write lyrical paeans to hide properties - the only real test of any hide is what does it look like in a decade. That said, this stuff isn't stiff but it has a firm hand and I imagine it will soften up in a few weeks.
Stitching and manufacturing quality is as good as it can be.
Vanson service was very helpful and swift. Took about a week to come to me in Australia.

I bought the Dakota last year and wore it a lot in Fall and Winter. One of the few jackets in my collection everyone in the family likes (and that's a tough one with my mother, I'll tell you that!
) and even strangers complimented on it (which may not seem special at first but we Germans are not so overly superficially friendly as I have experienced e.g. in the US; people here don't do much "nice talk"). Very functional design for all sorts of weather too. Guess the wide shoulders are not for everyone (especially here at TFL) but I feel it suits the do-it-all-workcoat-ish style of the jacket.

Can't say why but these and the A-1 jackets always look so much better on people than the A-2's. Looks great on you, man. Immediately went looking for what it'd set me back.

That's very interesting JJ. I agree about it being a functional work coat. Pretty much what I was going for. The nice thing for me is I didn't need to spec out a custom jacket to get the basic ingredients I wanted. The shoulders are 20 inches wide so they will be unacceptable to some but you're right about them fitting the pattern.

Thanks mate. Yes, it’s an Aero. This is brown oil-pull mid-weight horsehide from an English tannery as far as I know.
It has full action back and it’s pretty much the same as a G-1 model with some minor differences, I’m not really sure which ones apart from the collar that is a little different (more pointy).
I’m sure you can spec this jacket in any of the available leathers at Aero, but I personally think that mid-weight works best with this model.
I bought it four years ago from the OTR sales page in Aero’s website.
It’s super comfortable too.
Morning routine. I hope I can give this jacket a decent amount of wear inside before next fall and knock the new out. Middle aged man in brand new shiny black leather jacket is a touch painful to the eyes. Coffee curls for creases and I cut some pulls for the zips. I can’t live without those.
