Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

A second batch, all from the same estate of Paul Patton, I believe the ex-governor of Kentucky. It looks like he went on shopping spree at the factory outlet in the 60s. A Cav 50; a Dobbs 100, 2 50s, and a 40; and a Knox 50.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Western-Fedora-Dobbs-Cavanagh-Knox-Hat-Lot-Size-7-With-Boxes/382928217959

I assume these don’t show up on search notifications because they go fast. I have calculated (unscientifically) that the best deals on eBay hats are gone in two waves: within twenty minutes or within two hours. I believe it depends on the hour it gets posted and the size of the hat.

I offered within ten minutes on the first batch; I bought the second after communication offline so I had my offer ready within a few moments after he posted it. [I just wrote to ask if he had any more hats and took the ones with brown sweats.]

Price history: The seller turned down my initial offer of $235 on the first listing and countered for $300, then asked $320 on the second. I just threw my offer out there figuring they might not know what they might not know; the seller had a couple of Resistol 100s listed at the time but no one was really bidding on those hats, so I guess they just wanted to move these hats quickly.

Doc asked nicely for a couple to round out his collection, it looks like we more or less have a lifetime supply of thin ribbons :)

Good get! Even for size 7s that is an incredible deal!

I agree on the timing. My best scores were on hats that had been listed for less than five minutes. My last One-Hundred was listed for less than two minutes before I bought it. More than once I’ve see a new listing and in the time it takes me to open eBay it has sold.

Just bought this one today. I didn't have a St. Regis. Listing said 1930s.

More and more homburg hats are added to the collection I see, Max. That is a good thing of course! That one looks like a good one.

Did Stefan @steur just say he liked a green hat? Somebody write this down!

Well, he said it looked like a good one... didn't say he actually liked it.

But I do! That's a great looking Homburg!
Is this where I exercise my fifth amendment rights?:)
Full disclosure (Barr nothing): I actually do like the hat, which proves that a good homburg can be forgiven a great many things, even being green!:D

Due to the love of Jerry Lewis or because of this statement?

"Provence is from the estate of Jerry Lewis."
Didn't really care for his comedy but the man had quality.

"I have a loyalty that runs in my bloodstream, when I lock into someone or something, you can't get me away from it because I commit that thoroughly. That's in friendship, that's a deal, that's a commitment. Don't give me paper - I can get the same lawyer who drew it up to break it. But if you shake my hand, that's for life." -- Jerry Lewis

These listings always baffle me. If you're trying to sell a hat, why lead with a picture of a box? Still, curiosity got the better of me. After all, I am looking for a brown derby, so I thought maybe I'd get lucky:

Quickly contacted the seller to get dimensions as none were listed. Said he would measure when he got home. Longest hour of my life as I desperately wanted to click BIN. (The listing had already been active for several hours.) Seller responded back with the dimensions I was hoping for, and with a 2-3/4" brim! To top it off, was able to haggle a bit with an offer and finally agreed counteroffer.

After combing through the forum this looks to be from the early 40s. So in the end I guess I still got lucky. Should arrive in a few days.

That one is really nice! Great work. Those waits on offers can be long!
