My Phoenix in dark moss was a bit of an adventure. I wanted a deep purple/plum colored binding and crown ribbon. Rick gave me what I asked for, but not what I wanted...I didn’t do a very good job articulating what I was after (see the hat further back in this thread). Rick offered to fix it and make it how I wanted it. You don’t get a real feel for a hatter when everything is going right, but when there is a hiccup you get to see the mettle of the man. Rick went above and beyond to make me the hat I wanted. Neither he nor I could find the color of ribbon I wanted so Rick dyed his own ribbon. It still not quite dark enough so Rick over-dyed it with black. He didn’t stop until it was what I was after. It’s a wonderful hat and I’ll treasure it all the more due to it’s difficult birth.

100% Winchester beaver dark moss.
The brim is approximately 2 3/4” wide.
The crown is just shy of 6” high.
A slightly less ostentatious Tumwater style triple bow.

The hat is evenly pounced and has a great hand. The felt is a bit stiff, but I like it that way and I have no doubt that it will mellow over time. The fit is perfect and my long oval head can’t even tell I’m still wearing it after giving it an hour to mold to me. This hat just feels like it will last a lifetime. Thank you, Rick!

I think that ribbon really sets that hat off! It came out great. My wife keeps wanting me to get a dark green hat, and I've been resisting. I would have a hard time convincing her (or myself now), that it would not be a good look, after seeing yours. Well done on the color combination, and well done to Rick.

Whatever you do, keep that woman! Anyone who has a wife who wants him to get more hats has my envy!

I have several green hats and I find them versatile and easy to wear. You can go with a safe choice for ribbon: tone-on-tone, charcoal, etc., but I sometimes like a pop of color.

You're more than welcome Brent. The hat looks great on you. I appreciate the fact that this one forced me outside of my comfort zone. I try to learn and grow with each hat I make and your dark moss definitely provided me with that opportunity. Wear it in good health my friend.

I am fortunate to have an extremely understanding wife. And in fact, I am in the que for hats with both Rick & with Art. My wife picked out the hat I'm getting from Art. She even helped me pick a western hat from Mike Moore here in Tennessee. He's close enough for a nice Saturday jaunt. Perhaps I'll take a closer look at a green one in the near future. Might be a good excuse to go see Mike again!

Thanks, Rick. The ribbon color turned out perfect, and I know it wasn’t easy to get there.

The forest green nutria and the granite beaver I have in queue probably won’t get much wear until this Autumn, but I’m already enjoying the anticipation.

I've have to tell you Ryan, I'm liking that color combination more and more. Most likely will have to be a copy of it hanging on my personal hat rack.
Thanks Rick. I have to be honest in that I really wasn't sure how the gray/red color combo was going to turn out when all was said and done. I've seen it used in many fashions, but never on a brimmed hat. I've seen gray/burgundy hats and liked those, so I figured it had to work. Needless to say, it exceeded my expectations. I've received numerous compliments on it in public. If you ever decide to make a clone, be sure to post pics!

Very nice, Brent! I really like the muted/overdyed ribbon against that green felt - that is sharp! Rick makes a fine hat.

I attached a photo that is a better depiction of the general color of the hat. I would describe it as a medium toned gray. It may appear darker or lighter depending on the lighting conditions. Thank you for the compliments!

I like that color combination better every time I see it! Rick is working on a granite for me too, and the ribbon I sent him is a similar tone but not as bright. Thanks for taking the time to post - it makes me want to call Rick up and and offer him a bribe to move me up in the queue! :D

Funny thing about that ribbon Regan.

Thanks for the compliment Regan. Funny thing about that ribbon. I started with white rayon/cotton ribbon and dyed it with eggplant dye. When that didn't turn out dark enough I added a quarter part black dye to the bath to get the final color. The unexpected result was that the process took the factory new shine out of the ribbon and made it look and feel more like vintage ribbon. Who'd a thought.
P.S. It seems I'm always playing catch up, but your granite is just around the corner.

The granite is a nice color, and I'm sure you will be pleased with it. In all actuality, my ribbon isn't really all that bright. It's actually the sheen that gives it the bright appearance. When viewed with the naked eye under normal indoor lighting, it has a deeper tone to it. I tried to get a photo, but the camera on my phone collects too much of the sheen. In any case, I look forward to seeing what you and Rick come up with.

Not to worry, Rick, I think most folks on this board know that good things take time. I trust you to take your time to turn out a great hat. But if you ever reconsider bribery, I will make the check out to the "Humanshoes Hats for Humanity Mobile Hat Shop Fund" if it makes you feel better! :D

That's some funny stuff Regan. Best laugh I've had all day. Thanks. Now you have me thinking though. "Hats for Humanity" has a very nice ring to it and the mobile hat shop could use an influx of capital. Hmmmm....

This is the style of hat I’m considering for my dark green* Nutria hat.

28114a29125648da41daa2dd26767ad9.jpg

This is the color of the felt (much darker than the finished hat above):

1a3166189fa513e1727895ce8c930298.jpg

I’m not sure if the hat body is big enough to accommodate me as I’d need a tall crown and lots of brim. Anyway, I’m thinking about ribbon colors and widths. Any ideas? Right now I’m leaning towards 7/8 to 1” in black with a frayed bow.

* I “borrowed” this photo from somebody here at the Lounge. I hope you don’t mind.

My thoughts on ribbon color would be either beige, rust/copper, or brown.

I also was thinking along the lines of something in the brown family, but I'm also thinking a dark silver would look nice as well. Any way you shake it, I like the style. I'm interested to see what you come up with.
