J. Hückel´s Söhne "Superior", 55cm, late 1930s. The liner shows the 60th Anniversary of the store (founded in 1878) so that would be 1938. This hat belongs Horst Brömme of Brömme Hut Museum Nuremberg. Horst is in his early 80s (4th Generation owner and hat maker) and recently sold the store (Brömme Der Hutmacher am Turm) to a young lady by the name of Regina Friese-Wittmer but he still runs his fantastic hat museum / working hat shop in the basement of the store. I would highly suggest a visit but contact them in advance to make sure that Horst is available.

Horst in his hat museum / working hat shop (October 2017). I also visited October, 2018 to take some photos of some his old hats.

Garrett, Super! I would be interested in seeing the paper label if possible once it arrives.

Thanks, Steve. I'm trying to get the seller to ship the hat from Burgstädt to the U.S. They didn't offer international shipping but accepted my offer knowing I have an American address. Fingers crossed we can come to an arrangement. Its one of the oldest JHS stiff felts I've seen. Do you have a link to your oldest JHS stiff felt?

Garrett, Yes yours is definitely an old one. I look forward to seeing the paper label. Here are my old ones that are probably from about the same time period as yours.

J. Hückel´s Söhne Wien "Eureka - Plume", French Point 5 1/4, 117 grams, possibly early 1900s. This one is fantastic.

J.Hückel´s Söhne Wien, Point 5 1/2, possibly early 1910s.

Garrett, I have seen some other Japanese JHS market hats but were too small. I have photos from the JHS exhibition in Japan.

Early JHS on display at the Technical Museum in Brno

Garrett, Thank you for posting the photo. I wish I could see the liner and sweatband. At least they identified the hat company. The Museum Novojičínska doesn't display any brand information and I wasn't able to see under the hats they had on display. Unfortunately they don't seem to be interested in such things. In my opinion every hat in their collection (displayed and archived) should have a complete photo profile.

Steve, those are all jaw-dropping melones! And seem to be in fantastic condition as well. I was particularly impressed with the removable liner model. The good news is that the seller agreed to ship the hat to the states so it should be here sometime in June.

Indeed, they should show the beautiful and intricate interiors JHS produced. The more examples from this firm I see the more I am inclined to think that they were the finest hat manufacturing firm in the world.

Garrett, The problem is the Museum Novojičínska is focused on JHS, A. Peschel and Brüder Böhm family history and not the hat and felt production. They have ~ 6000 hats in their collection but most are archived. The ones on display have no company information and there is no way to see the liners and sweatbands. As you know I am a big fan of JHS. :)

Garrett, Thanks! JHS was most famous for Soft Felt Velour Hats but they really made some great Stiff Felts. I am happy to hear that the seller is shipping the Stiff Felt to you. I am looking forward to its arrival.

Circa 1930s JHS Durit "Crystall" Velour in the deepest shade of green I've seen.

As Steve can confirm it is very difficult to capture the depth of color on these old JHS velours. They seem to absorb all light sources.

Unfortunately a size 54cm so it will be for display only - considering it was $22 SHIPPED from Germany I think I came out a winner on this one.

Garrett, It's really fantastic! Yes very difficult to photograph. The Velour color and finish are beautiful. I am sorry about the size but I glad it's in good hands.

Thanks, Steve. This must've been how you felt when learning your 1930's silver JHS Crystall Superior velour was also a size 54cm. Still, among the finest finishes JHS offered in my opinion.

Pre-WW1 JHS Melone. Unfortunately a size 57cm and with some minor front crown indentations. Could probably be steamed out.

Worked on at some point - the liner has been taped back into place and no paper labels to be found. Disappointing.
