Larger than life... I can kind of see that, especially when compared to Oldman (who I much prefer as an actor). I wonder if this distinction is about introverted versus extroverted actors?

I've never been a big believer in the 'star' label because, like charisma, it seems so subjective and lacking in clear criteria. Really it just means any actor whose face alone will guarantee a large audience. It's box office. There are many huge stars who are utterly banal.

The biggest problem with the Hollywood 'star' culture is that it is so limiting for actors. Some great break out of it - Brad Pitt is one. Others, well. Sly Stallone - look at him in something like the first tow Rocky pictures, or Copland. There's a man who can act. Unfortunately, as an A-list Hollywood star, he mostly gets hired to play the Sly Stallone Persona that is big box office, rather than to actually act the role in the film. Type-casting at its best/ worst.

I agree Edward. I guess if you become a product (which is essentially what a star is) you get asked to deliver the same thing forever - tried and true. Who wants to take risks? Many actors willingly partake in this process as it guarantees cash for all the tacky toys they seem to want to own.

And to be fair, while it's easyt to critique their art from the outside, any jobbing actor no matter how big, if they want to keep working they have to work. It's a very rare performer indeed who can get work after a decade off or so. The notion that you get really rich and can then turn down what you like isn't quite true. (It's also mazing how many big names really struggle after a career high. Actos get turned down for a lot of things if they're too recogniseable from something else. You ever notice it's a rare Big Name from a huge US sitcom where they get paid a million an episode who really goes anywhere when their seven or eleven years on that show run dry? Even films - Dominic Monaghan of Lord of the Rings thought he was set for roles for life after that trilogy, but he didn't work for over two years when it finished.)

I don't feel for them at all, Edward. I have worked in entertainment - admittedly it was 20 years ago. Nevertheless even moderately successful actors can make more money in a couple of years than most people will make in a whole career of hard work. The stars we are talking about can make two films and retire. They can afford to never work again. Or do some real work in the theatre and not worry about the money. But many continue to choose to do crap. Which is their right, of course.

I don't really follow what celebrities do outside their movies, but from random photos here and elsewhere, some are either employ pro stylist and shopper 24/7 or personally know how to dress well, while some other are not or don't care, or trying to disguise their popularity by dressing ultra casual ( looking like a bum) inbetween movies.

Oh, sure - my symp[athy for them has limits given the financial compensation they receive, but it's certainly the case that if actors want to keep working, they have to, well, keep working. The advantage of ther stage is that, of course you can own your own performance to a much greater degree; with screen-work you can be at the mercy of the editor in terms ofc how 'good' your performance is. Can't be many jobs where the thing you did for money / because you had to to advance in the industry but hated is all out there for attention and criticism. It certainly can be a well compensated, guilded cage for those who succeed, though.

I get what you mean about recognition. There's some actors I see in films and all I see is the role I'm most familiar with seeing them in. Daniel Radcliffe, for example, will ALWAYS be Harry Potter to me. I grew up watching him playing the character, and that's all I see when I look at him.

Yeah, that's definitely overdone in a clownish way. This style needs to be subtle, not scream "I'm a hipster biker!". The bellboy jacket is too new.

for something that is custom size to him the fit is horrible, how can the shoulder and the upper sleeve be that big, even when he was bigger when being measured still it would fit too big. looks like flared riding pants on the biceps
