As for your questions, it all depends on what you like. If you like the look then what else matters...unless you’re married than she is what matters. I’ll say that bigger guys, of which I am one, tend to look better in hats with more square inches of felt than your typical stingy brim fedora. Jazz clubs back in the day certainly had some wide brim/tall crown patrons; musicians too. Stingy brims with their frequent low crowns look best, in my opinion, on our svelte brethren.

Have you looked at the Filson tin cloth brush and packer hats? I have one somewhere and it was/is a good hard wearing hat that can take a beating.

We’re way outside of the Golden Era so I’m not sure what kind of response you’re going to get. The Fedora Lounge wasn’t intended to be a clearing house for all information related to hats, but it never hurts to ask.

I just read that Kirk Douglas is one of the last surviving actors from the Golden Era of movies. I didn't realize we had one of those either, and I certainly wouldn't think the Gold Age of movies was over by 1970. That said when I do wear my large brim hats around, on the bus, in the car, or just sitting in the post office, they can be cumbersome, since the brim often hits things and I don't have a place to put it. The ultra-orthodox around here, wear hats with huge brims even during the hottest part of the summer on the bus and everywhere. Inconvenience never seems to hold them back. But for anyone who has ever seen Fiddler on the Roof would know that tradition comes first in their community.

But anyways I just specifically want an outback hat. I don't really need one. Just that hat in the camping store looked cool and brought back nostalgic feelings for crocodile dundee.

I did order a Tilley T3 off amazon. At 59cm it was too small for me, and the material was very filmy, the brim would not stay up. I couldn't believe it was an $80 hat. It had the quality of $30 hat no name from China, and it has the feel of a cheap denim material. It was the only hat I eve went through the hassle return via mail order. Too bad cause I remember the classic Tilley's looking high quality at Cabela's back when I used to live state-side.

I wear a 7 7/8 or 8 in Tilley, New Era and Akubra (size 63) hats. I am astonished that XXL and XL sized hats from makers like Dobbs and Brixton fit me. Some of their on-line sellers caution that these manufacturers tend to be oversize.
