I've never pictured myself in a boater, or contemplated purchasing one. I connect them too much in my mind to political party activities.Staying at my sister's place in this quintessential English village. If I can't wear this ca. 1910/1920s boater here, I can't wear it anywhere [emoji6]

Don't know the answer to that to be honest. It's a bit like the oilskin covering of liners. There's been some debate wether or not those were meant just for protection prior to sale and to be taken out after or not. Basting stitches (or oilskin covers for that matter) don't detract from the functionality of the hat. Leaving jacket pockets basted closed does, because you can't use the pockets.
