Staying at my sister's place in this quintessential English village. If I can't wear this ca. 1910/1920s boater here, I can't wear it anywhere [emoji6]

I've never pictured myself in a boater, or contemplated purchasing one. I connect them too much in my mind to political party activities.
That looks very nice though, with the large dark ribbon.
Just what I need, yet another hat fetish.

I know what you mean. I never imagined buying a boater either. Suddenly, you see fellow Loungers wearing them, one pops up at a vintage/antique market, and hey presto, you're a proud owner of a boater [emoji4]

Cool hat! I really like your side by side and ebike! I have considered getting a razor, since there are miles of desert just outside my back gate. Do you ride the ebike off road?

Thank you,the side by side is a CfMOTO 800cc about half the price of a Razor. The Ebike I ride on and off road.Wish I had miles of desert just outside my gate.

Excellent! And a great inspiration. I will be visiting a similar locale in early September. I wonder if it will be too late for a straw boater??
Here's hoping for an Indian summer, Alan. Your locale deserves to see one of your boaters.

Thats right.
Why do some back bows and shark gills have a basting X stitch across them, but others dont?
Is it like jacket pockets basted closed?
Some people leave them for maintaining the original lines of the garment.
Others dont.

Don't know the answer to that to be honest. It's a bit like the oilskin covering of liners. There's been some debate wether or not those were meant just for protection prior to sale and to be taken out after or not. Basting stitches (or oilskin covers for that matter) don't detract from the functionality of the hat. Leaving jacket pockets basted closed does, because you can't use the pockets.
