Steve, it's the thinness of the felt that makes me question the quality. In all other aspects it's a top notch Wegener. I've never seen such a thin, maleable felt on a pre 40s Bowler. Perhaps it's because I haven't seen enough of them.
Steve, Later JHS Stiff Felts were popular in Germany and Austria because they had some Soft Felt tendencies. They also tend not to crack but you can see where yours was damaged (dent with some cracking). This was a big issue (dents / cracks) with Stiff Felts (also too heavy, too stiff).

I don't think I would have bid on it if not for the goading. It looked a little stiff and kinda iffy. However, I succumbed to the peer pressure and threw out a cheap bid and won it.
It hit the door yesterday, and I was still sort of, "Meh," but now that I have given it a good brushing and steaming, I'm pretty darn happy. Lordy it was dusty, which is why it looked stiff in the pics With a 2 1/2" brim (5 1/2" crown), it's really a Strat clone, but still - very happy.

It has a dark, reddish brown sweatband, still in good shape. No interior tags or union labels. It could be anywhere from 50s to 70s (but I'd put my money on 60s-70s).
