WTB Vanson x Left Field Commando Size L

FYI- there are are few versions of this jacket. The LF-sold version is slimmer fitting. The butterscotch version is a bit boxier. No idea if you have tried them on but there you go. It may change the size you are looking for and allow a wider net to be cast.

Butterscotch also has one in HH.

Thanks JMax!
I have checked out the Butterscotch models, of which there are a few different versions to choose from. I still think I like the original LF one the best but I certainly would be open to buying a Butterscotch Commando if it looked right for me.

I agree. Good luck with the search. Awesome jacket.

I think you’d need an XL man. I had a derby in a L and it was way too small. I think the commando is a similar pattern, with augmented details.

Ton,
If the numbers are right then I’m definitely an L in this one. With 21.25” across the shoulders and a 49.5” chest I believe it will be a comfortable fit. From the photos it doesn’t look like the jacket has a very dramatic taper either so it should fit fine at the bottom. Only one way to find out though...

I’m looking for a large Vanson x Left Field Commando in new or lightly used condition. Please PM me if you have one available. Thanks.

I'd consider making a thread on StyleForum as well. I've seen a few turn up in their classified in the past, might be someone would be willing to part with theirs.

Monitor,
Thanks for the suggestion but TFL is my only forum. I suppose if one doesn’t turn up sooner or later here I could always reach out to Vanson and have them make me one. Now there I go opening Pandora’s box again!

Vanson*

They will not make a limited edition collaboration jacket like the Vanson x Left Field Commando - as Left Field technically owns the rights to the design. Same thing for any of the Butterscotch collabs. Also - it's the same deal with any interior fabrics. Vanson is quite strong on using one of their 3 rayons (for an un-insulated jacket): black, red, or tan.

They have experienced that over long periods of time, satins and similar break down and are much more prone to tearing than their (proven) rayon materials. As a customer, you do have the option of sending in a material to Vanson to sew into the jacket - but it's done so at no long term guarantee to it's durability.

Any of these materials that you see in these collab jackets - whether it's Hawaiian print or plaid flannel or satin - is all just sent in by the respective collaborator with the same disclaimer.

B1lf,
That’s good to know man. I wasn’t aware of that, but as you explained it makes a lot of sense as it offers a bit of protection to the folks who collaborate with Vanson on their custom designs. I would be perfectly happy owning the jacket with Vanson’s black rayon as I have found this to be a nice no frills lining.
Thanks for catching my typo in the last post as well. Siri helps a lot as I am typing but she does not want to spell Vanson correctly for me yet.

I had one of these, the green/blue flannel Left Field. M I believe...it ran a little long and a bit large. Regret the sale. That Butterscotch collab pebbled leather looks so ace though!

I live in Long Beach and have visited Butterscotch a few times. Great shop and awesome owner, Tommy. Super nice guy.

As much as I love a lot of the clean designs of the Vanson x Butterscotch collabs - I am personally not a fan of any of the pebbled or tumbled leathers.

The X150 there was killer! I also love the comp weight. The other above mentioned materials just seem fairly lackluster in the hand, in comparison. I would image they wouldn't mold to your body as nicely either. Something to consider.

My thoughts exactly. I love Vansons comp weight leather and I would like to check out the X150 some day. As luck would have it the only Commando I have found available online in my size is one of the medium weight model “S” jackets still for sale at the Butterscotch site.

The Left Field version is X-150. You really will like it.

Vanson does have other lining options, just depends what is on-hand. I had a number of choices for my Berserker/Chopper and Vest. They also changed the shape of the D-Pocket on my vest to my specification.

They also will direct build a collaboration jacket for you, at least they did for me. But it may depend on the collaboration as some are just stock jackets with tweaks while others are more distinct collaborations, like the Commando appears to be. Though LF has the jacket in stock and sells them direct. Other collaborators send you to Vanson for the jacket and you pay them and they give Vanson their cut or vice versa. It does not hurt to ask Vanson, maybe they can/would do it.

Yeah let me clarify that Vanson will be more than happy to make you a fully custom jacket and an extremely low up-charge (if any) to one of their standard jackets.

I you want a Model E without epaulets and no belt and extra body/sleeve length, with X-150/Z-150/Comp leather: they'll do that all day long. And as @JMax points out, doesn't hurt to ask them on even a collab jacket.

I did exactly that: and have a Model E incoming in 1-2 weeks with Z-150, no epaulets, brass hardware, black rayon lining. It's also worth noting for anyone in Long Beach/LA: you can customize/custom order ANY of Vanson's jackets through Butterscotch. I did not know that until after I placed my order with Vanson direct.

Good info to know. I want to see that new E too, sounds perfect.

And that's a good point. If they decide not to direct build a Commando, I get the sense that if one were to call Vanson and ask for a Model E (just to use your example) with: The coin pocket and left side hand warmer replaced with a D Pocket, belt loops / belt removed, shoulder gussets instead of AB; the back of something like their Thunderbird pattern, no epaulets, nickel hardware and two-way main zip, X-150, whatever else. etc., they would build you a "Commando". Probably would be cheaper too.

I was told multiple times by Vanson that the original Commando jacket sold direct by Left Field is X-150. Furthermore, I have other custom Vanson outerwear using X-150 that is the same as my bought-direct-from LF Commando. X-150 is awesome and I prefer it to CW, no matter the CW's thickness. Though I have read that some here prefer the CW/Z.

Oh, I got a two-way zip as well. I also debated the no-belt: but the standard one is completely removable and don't mind the loops without the belt in so I went with that.

Your above build sounds great!

I have read conflicting things on the leather used x/z-150 for the Vanson Left Field collab, anyone know for sure which it is?

As for CW vs MW vs X150 vs Z150 vs pebbled/tumbled/etc:

I already have CW on my Vanson Model B (from a few years ago) and it's incredible. The best leather I've owned to date. I ordered a standard Model E with rayon lining in CW... it came it, and aside from being too small, I was not impressed that much with the hide I received, which is strange coming from Vanson.

I also received a Vanson Raider just 2 weeks ago. It's from approximately the early 2000s: it's also CW and incredible. The cut is slightly too short for me (I have a long torso); but again the leather is awesome.

I decided to opt for the X150 or Z150... to try something new for this jacket. I heard the X150 was a bit more stiff and a required a tough break in, so I went with that. I actually really, really like a product with a tough break in: whether it's a leather jacket or a pair of raw selvedge denim jeans, I've experienced the tougher materials mold to my body better. All the 'trouble' is worth it in the end.

The X150 is waxed so it has a bit of a shiny look to it at first, that will evolve with wear. I haven't seen much of it online... and I've never seen it in person. I did see the Z150 in person and it looked great.

That'll do for me, anyway I'm sitting tight waiting for mine to arrive.
