Aero Vicenza vs CXL FQHH vs CXL Steerhide = 1st world problems

I don't think much of anything looks as good as CXL steer or HH...absolutely beautiful, problem is for me is it looks best on a hangar because that is where it is going to reside 99% of the time. I know it is a cliche, but just can't get past the feeling these heavy jackets are wearing me. I find them terribly uncomfortable, and they look so awkward and unnatural on when new, so they never get wore in enough for a proper break in. It might as well be a painting or piece of art lol.

I am probably going to do Vicenza when I get a new jacket. It seems to fit the bill for me, though I haven't seen one in the flesh yet nor tried one on. Some colors in Vicenza don't translate well and look bland and have no character, and others have plenty it would seem from pics.

I am curious about the blackened brown. Does anyone have pics of one that has been worn a good bit? Just curious how the brown shows through. Is it just on the edges and wear points or does the brown generally show through most of the jacket over time? If the latter, I just rather do straight black.

Vic does look rather even in grain in general which is why I prefer other veg tan leathers to it. The OP's example looks better than most examples of it IMO. However, if/when I get an Aero it will absolutely be with Badalassi.

I bought 2 aero jackets this summer - a cafe racer in FQHH and a Sheene in Vicenza. I bought the CR first, mostly intended for riding a motorcycle but was hoping that it would be good for casual wear as well. It is substantial and it’s great for the bike but I don’t think I’d throw it on for walking the dog around the block. The Sheene is easy to throw on and head out the door but it feels somewhat delicate. Oddly each jacket makes me like the other more - kinda Yin and Yang - but they each have a specific purpose. Overall I think I like the FQHH just a little better and if I ordered another jacket it would be in that. Also, where I live it gets pretty cold and the FQHH seems more appropriate for the climate here.

My CXL FQHH Hooch Hauler is my only leather jacket and my first experience with a "real" leather jacket. I've had it almost a couple months now, but of course summer weather has prevented more than occasional wear. I agree that it's not the easiest to slip or have on, and sometimes the collar feels like it's pushing on my neck (or 'wearing me' as someone put it above). That said, I can't stop admiring how it looks, and yes that includes when it's on me :).

But, I think maybe one-jacket people like me have some advantage over the die-hard multi-jacket people on here when it comes to breaking in FQHH, because I don't have to work it into a larger rotation! While having a rotation of awesome jackets is hardly a problem, at least I know my one jacket will, sooner rather than later, break in and feel even more amazing. And in the meantime, I get to enjoy that process in all its FQHH glory.

My two cents! o_O

I have the same problem to choose so I request a sample from Aero

Here are 3 sample from different hides. So I beleive blind test like this should help to decide (or make it worse [emoji28])

Which one you guys love the most from the picture and guess what leather is A, B or C ? I will give the answer few days later :)

Interesting!

I feel fairly confident in guessing that the first one (A) is cxl steer. But the other two are harder. (B) looks like Vicenza and (C) like cxl hh , but I’m not at all sure.

Funny game. Id say A is vicenca, B is goatskin, C is clx hh.. but let me tell you this, I have jackets from all these hides hanging 2 feet from where I am rn and still am not sure, these samples in a way look very different to a finished jacket.

Yes agree with @torfjord. A has got to be CXL steer and the second has the uniformity of Vicenza. The third could be tumbled CXL HH though?

Each batch seems to be slightly different, in coloring, in grain, and even in thickness. So It's impossible to pick a leather sample and have a jacket made from the exact same hide. But of the 3 choices, I'd bet sample A is CXL Steer.

Here’s a hint. It’s 3 different leather :)

Steer vs Horse here’s my observation

Horse may go through hardwork/more active live, thus the muscle is higher density and more pack/fine fibers.

Wrinkles happen when the leather lower side (closer to corium?) fibers get “broken/detach”.

Vicenza vs CXL

The tanning process is different. Thus it affect on the color attributes of the leather.

CXL leather is packed with wax which creates “pull” effect and make the color varies on wrinkled area.

So, is this give a better idea which leather is A/B/C?

Samples are a bad way to pick leather - it gives you no idea of how the jacket will drape or wear. But it does give you a colour - which again may look radically different when made into a jacket. I couldn't tell you much about those even if I saw them in person. Just my experience but I have flirted with samples on and off over 30 years and it has never been a reliable way to pick a hide.

Sample definitely will not be able to tell how it will drape. But other properties should be aligned (how it will wrinkles, color change)

I'm unconvinced by that F, but if it works for you, great!
I’ve stopped asking for samples b/c I don’t find them all that informative anymore. Can’t recall the last time a sample and the finished jacket had anything in common. For me it’s all about the batch and I just ask specific questions as to the batch qualities. Weight, grain and a pic usually does it.

The first sample (marked A) looks like Aero CXL Steerhide in cordovan color.
