Schott 637 "bomber jacket" arrived in Western Australia

Well the previously mentioned Schott 637 "Bomber jacket" has arrived safe in Perth Western Australia.

UPSIDE: Fairly good condition and a good fit. Factory 44" Schott. I LIKE it !

DOWNSIDE : Well, once again the "vintage bouquet" , can't see that on fleabay haha..

So "the process" starts again. Cool/cold tap wash with "Martha's softly wool wash"

Made in Australia , with eucalyptus. That should fix the "vintage bouquet".

Jacket has obviously been "damp stored" AKA the whiff , and the Verdigris on the zippers. ( Copper corrosion !) That has been cleaned with WD40 and cotton buds already

Once dry the jacket will be treated with R.M. Williams leather treatment.

Well Wednesday night and the jacket has been "wool washed" with no spin cycle

Left to " lie and drip/drain" in the bath for 5 hours , now on a genuine HD jacket hanger hanging in the shower.

Tomorrow it will be outside in the dry shade for probably 3 days to air dry ( winter here , 5C overnight , 40% chance rain.)

Then the re-lubing of all 3 zippers and the leather treatment application. Coupla hours work there for Saturday arvo' !

Saturday arvo (afternoon) to be dry, sunny and 22 C , so the jacket may get 2 or 3 hours in direct winter sun.

That has helped the leather treatment to absorb on previous restoration attempts with good success.

I did try wearing the jacket for a day but could not get away from the "vintage bouquet"

Compared to my Aero Highwayman , Eastman and Schott collection it was/is , just well too "on the nose"

Hoping for no shrinkage , as the sleeves etc are just perfect as-is.

Just inside the male main zipper insertion pin the material/tape is dodgy , need to attend to that also.

Thinking of either superglue or epoxy resin to bolster the remaining material.

Don't want to be removing the original OEM brass zipper in a just arrived jacket if at all possible. I does zip up OK.

Nice jacket out interest is it a heavy jacket weight wise?

I’ve only ever washed 1 jacket using similar technique to yours a naked cow hide Schott peacoat came out really clean if anything the leather looked even better don’t think there was any shrinkage , my favourite leather conditioner these days is the RM Williams one use this on boots jackets you name its great stuff

To Boyo. Yes the odour has gone methinks . all I can smell this afternoon is damp leather with the faintest odour of Eucalyptus. Hopefully both will minimise to zero once dry. Only 15C today at a peak , with steady drizzle this afternoon.
So the drying will be Saturday at best.

Slow drying is best for avoiding "shrinkage" of course , don't want those sleeves any shorter

To Thuggee. Yes this is a "heavy" jacket , akin to a Schott "Cop Jacket" which is where it had it's design roots I'm sure.
Once wet through it was a task to lift it out of the top loader washing machine.

This is the next step , warm this can in the sun a little and get applying with a foam cube. Can be messy !

Just found this in the Schott archives. Some interesting stuff there for Schott jacket geeks ( like me haha..!)

The style 637 was produced from 1994 - 1996, we listed this jacket as a Vintaged Steerhide Bomber jacket. It was not listed under our motorcycle styles. The jacket was offered in the colors black, brown and black olive. Gail

Model 637 jacket made in 1996 in Rochester, NY. It appears to be more of a "fashion-oriented" design than a dedicated motorcycle jacket, although it seems to have been influenced by police jackets of the 1970s

I like this jacket. Reminds me of a windward without the super short body and I prefer buckles to the elastic waistband. It’s cool!

Well the "de-stinky" process has been completed and has worked perfectly. Lengthy endeavour but worth the effort.

Jacket now smells , well , like a leather jacket should. Nice clean leather aroma. No Eucalyptus smell neither.

The whole process had the jacket hanging outside in the shade ,and for a fair few hours in the late afternoon sun.

The male zipper pin insert had frayed material from the bottom , fairly common on older jackets I believe. Careful use of direct Superglue has hardened up the remaining material so it seems fine for now.

Wore the jacket to work yesterday , and it was 100% "cool" for a relatively warm jacket.

I am afraid I am not too good on the "fit pics" but I am working on it.

Looks good in the brown. I have the same jacket in black myself.

I wear it as a "casual" jacket , no zipped sleeves , which are necessary for riding.
