The BORSALINO BROTHERHOOD

Here's one I didn't post yet. Borsalino lobbia in black. Brim at 5,5cm and crown 11cm at the center dent. No quality designation for this one. The label indicates an early to mid-sixties hat. Unusual is the sweatband on this one, which has a different imprint than other Borsalinos, probably because the band itself is more narrow and wouldn't have had enough room for the angled imprint that is the standard for the brand.
The retailer Piet Heniger closed shop in 2008 after 136 years being located in Rotterdam.

The second of a trio of imperfects
Borsalino Ghiaccio 1 R.jpg
Borsalino Qualità Extra Superiore size 6 1/2 or 7 1/2 US. True size
Borsalino Ghiaccio 2 R.jpg
The felt had some traces of moths, so Fleur of Penumbra Hat minimize them
Borsalino Ghiaccio 3 R.jpg
Felt color is "Ghiaccio" with a short hair finish and the ribbon is contrasting. The small invasion of red on the felt is given by the color of the red bricks of the house.
Borsalino Ghiaccio Interno R.jpg
The proportions are as follow: overwelted brim with a single seam are at 6 cm. the crown is 11 cm. high
Borsalino Ghiaccio etichetta carta R.jpg
Made in the historical Borsalino factory in 1977 it is in excellent conditions
Borsalino Ghiaccio 4 R.jpg
The restoration work has succeeded very well and this makes me happy because I really like the hat and among the many Borsalino in the collection this is a rare color.

Lovely hat, Daniele. Its shape reminds me of one I have in azoico colour.

A few words to explain my purchases of used hats. Here in Italy it is difficult to find old or vintage quality hats in my size (60) so I look for lots, maybe in different sizes, where to fish what I like, small sizes remain to be sold. Very often the hats in the lot are of different quality and then the doubt arises about the possibility of restoring some particularly valuable hat. It was the case of this lot of three Borsalino in which each had some defect.
Today the first one

Borsalino Qualità Extra Extra Superiore Size is 5 1/2 or 7 1/4 US but, incredible for a Borsalino, it fit easily my 60 cm. head
View attachment 180740
The hat is a "Light Weight" felt and the color is "Rutenio". Very light and malleable
View attachment 180741
The ribbon is of matching color and with a particular bow
View attachment 180742
The proportions are as follow: brim overwelted with a particular seam at 6 cm. Crown at 10.5 cm.
View attachment 180743
The hat was fully cleaned and restitched brim welt, the restoration was made in Netherlands at Penumbra Hats
View attachment 180744
It was made, probably in the late fifties, and sold in Italy
A "new" Borsalino for mediterranean midseason
Daniele, Super! I look forward to seeing this one in action. I really like the colors and form. Also the other 2 restores look great. You are lucky to have Penumbra Hats available for restoration work.

Lovely hat, Daniele. Its shape reminds me of one I have in azoico colour.
Thanks Stefan, the name of the color is a little bit odd because it is more pale blue (azzurro in Italian language) then "Ghiaccio", but we know in Borsalino they were very creative with colors:)

Thanks Steve, this Borsalino is a very nice example of the last years of Alessandria craftmanship and Fleur of Penumbra is an excellent hatter

I do like the color combo on that one.

Borsalino Qualità Extra superiore size 6 or 7 3/8 US but it is less wide, so more a 58 7 1/4
There is no paper label because it was cleaned too much by the shop where it was purchased and it lost the Borsalino data

It is part of a Borsalino lot I decided to restore in the Penumbra hats atelier - Netherlands. I was intrigued by the very rare color of the felt. It was cleaned and repounced to give back the original color of the felt and the result is fantastic

It was made, from the seller indications in the late seventies, early eighties.

The measurements are: brim at 5,5 cm. crown at 10 cm. Plain felt and very malleable and light in a color that could be “Miele” or "Albino"
Ribbon is the original. Made in the historical Borsalino factory in Via Cento Cannoni - Alessandria

The interior is completely clean and ready to serve again.
A Borsalino as new in a wonderful color after some excellent work made by Fleur

Aha, so that's why it reminds me of the azoico. I thought it had a bluish tone to is. This is the one I have, also an overwelt:

borsalino azoico_01.jpg
borsalino azoico_02.jpg
borsalino azoico_10.jpg

They do look very similar: mislabelled perhaps?

Borsalino Volga 4 R.jpg
The third component of the imperfect trio, together with the Borsalino "Rutenio" and the "Ghiaccio".
Borsalino Volga 3 R.jpg
Borsalino Qualità Extra Superiore size 6 1/2 or 7 1/2 US
Borsalino Volga 1R.jpg
This arrived in excellent condition, but the ribbon and, especially the bow, were useless. I had no indication of why.
Borsalino Volga etichetta carta R.jpg
Borsalino "Misto Volga" with "Asfalto" ribbon put back on its original shape by Fleur to Penumbra Hat with the replacement of the ribbon with a perfect copy of the original in "Asfalto" the hat has become perfect.
Borsalino Volga interno R.jpg
The interior is perfect and the felt too. It is a mixing of light and deep greys, very malleable
Borsalino Volga 5R.jpg
The measurements of "M. Volga" are: overwelted brim at 5 cm. Crown at 11 cm. for another Borsalino of the great "Misto" family

Stefan I try to give you informations
I believe that "azoic" refers to the color obtained through the procedure described, the geological era is to be excluded:)
It's very well possible, but a strange choice for them to do so (but then it is Borsalino; no stranger to odd choices). From what I gather the azoico process was used for more colours.
