How do folks react to your hat wearing?

It's a funny thing....At a certain point it seems one's interest in hats goes from an occasional wearer with a stingier brim, to an I don't 'care' anymore attitude, and you're rocking 3' plus wide brims with aplomb. I've always been into hats, however, it's only been quasi recent that I've truly built up the devil may care attitude that goes so so well with hat-wearing. I wear them now to be enjoyed and care less and less what others may/may not think. Funny how it all works.
There you go my man, you rock that hat and cock a snook at convention. What next? How about a nice pair of shoes?

I haven't been subscribed to this thread for a while.
That looks like a fabulous time!
It certainly was, and the best of it was, it was all for charity. A substantial amount was raised on the day too.

I had a great story about vintage wingtips going!
My 5 year old grandson could probably find it, but I can't really afford to fly him out this week.

Wearing hats in Europe is not as common as it is over the Atlantic ocean or at the antipodes. I have done that in many countries while traveling for both pleasure or business.

I find that, generally, I get many looks, mostly positive, a few find some models ( such as a boater or a bowler or derby hat) a little more hilarious. But I have also found that often times people treat me with some sort of enhanced “ respect”, which is not unpleasant, for whatever that’s worth.

The weirdest reaction which I received was a few years ago in Germany and the “ unheimlich" feeling it gave me still lingers on to this day .

A friend of mine and I (both wearing dark hats and suits but nothing really very “ ethnic") were walking in the streets of this beautiful village, Schwanheim, in the outskirts of Frankfurt to reach our B&B there ( where we have been many times while attending a musical instruments fair in Frankfurt). All of a sudden we noticed that we had caught the attention of several kids...seemingly not from German stock and possibly Turkish (not unusual in Germany or the Netherlands) from the language they were speaking.

At some point also an adult joined the “ procession". The adult apostrophized us with a loud “ Shalom!”. To which I responded with a “ Shalom!” myself. But few minutes after I felt very uneasy about it, not quite so much because I thought I was in any danger (it wasn’t that kind of situation) but more because I realized ( I have distant but sure Jewish roots) the kind of implications that a “ different” look may have. o_O

Nowadays you need self confidence to wear a nice mens hat and are usually rewarded by people treating you with more respect because of the self confidence you display.
You know the sayings: "Kleider machen Leute" or "Fine feathers make fine birds".

“ Shalom!”

I assume you were wearing a black fedora?
Many orthodox Jews like wearing black wide brim felt hats, usually with a telescope crown. Here is an example from the TV series "Peeky Blinders" (Tom Hardy)

I suppose that I do “ own” my hat as some folks say, and this manifests itself in the way I appear (to some people at least ;)) . Neither myself nor my friend were wearing a hat that anyone “ in the know” would think could show any special connection with any hassidic stream ( I see there’s a thread on the forum which is very explicative https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/hasidic-jewish-hats.84508/page-2). I was wearing a black stingy brim pork pie and my friend a dark brown ( so not even black) fedora, we both had dark grey suits . But obviously the crowd wasn’t one of connoisseurs. Many Jews whom aren’t Hassidim, even if pious, don’t wear any special attire and wear a Kippah ( or as many Yiddish spekers would call it Yarmulke ) and in the temple use a prayer shawl ( Tallis or Taled ).

There are always those people, who usually mean well, who just pop out the first thing they think of regardless of what they see.

I have worn stingies and been called Indiana Jones. I have worn fairly accurate Indy hats and been called cowboy or (get this) Crocodile Dundee. I have worn cowboy (western) hats and been called Indiana Jones.

Some people see a hat and whatever the first person in their head that's known for his hat is what pops out of their mouths, regardless of hat color/size/shape/proportions/trim, etc..

And it's usually not meant as an insult. On the contrary, often it's complimentary.

Very rarely do comments match the hat I'm wearing.... Indiana Jones, Juan Valdez, Humphrey Bogart, etc. People mean well, they're just not hat people so they're uneducated in the details.

Recently, while getting gas in my wife's car, a guy called from the next row over yelled, "Put that hat away! I want that hat! I love your hat, man!"

Great reaction, I've had the same with the addition, "I would love one but haven't the balls to wear it."

It was your uneducated remark that caught my eye. The general manager of the supermarket that we use graduated from the same university as me, albeit forty years apart. He always has time for a quip, but a couple of days ago he surpassed himself. I'm sure he must have looked this up, or came across it whilst reading, he said:
"I can always tell when I see you in the store by the physiognomy of your outline." "Surely you mean silhouette," I countered, implying that I knew what physiognomy meant. "No," he corrected, "a silhouette is a shadow," "so it is," I said, smiling. Then as he walked away, but was still in earshot, I said: "Smartarse!" He turned and laughed, looked at my hat and trousers and said, "you never disappoint."

Once he had gone I wrote physiognomy in the notes section of my phone. Not being the smartarse that the store manager is, I have yet to work out how to connect my smart phone to the internet. Give me time, I've only had it six years. Back home, out came my battered, but cherished, dictionary. Not being a smartarse take two, I had omitted the letter "g" but come on, have you ever heard the word? Anyway, it read: " Physiognomy, the general form or appearance of someone or something." If you want to see my physiognomy go to: Bring Me Baggy Trousers thread. https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/bring-me-baggy-trousers.76487/page-2 and scroll down to #31.

Now who can I show off my knowledge of physiognomy too?

In the past week or so I have been searching to find my brand of toothpaste, but for some reason or other it has been out of stock everywhere that I have tried. Today, I had ventured further afield but still to no avail. Texting my wife I said to her that she mentioned a place where she had seen it. She text me back saying where it was and could I pop into the pharmacy opposite collect her prescribed medication.

Tina was right, I found my toothpaste. Now all I needed was to collect her prescription. The lady at the counter said: "Oh my look at you, don't you look regal." I've been called some things but regal, that's a new one. She asked about the hat, I told her it was a Panama, she said that it looked like a cricket umpire's hat. Then she commented on my shirt, trying to guess the famous star depicted in the fabric. "You're thinking of Carmen Miranda," I suggested. She smiled and agreed. Then she looked at my pants, I told her that my wife made them, she said: "I think I know your wife, she's the red haired lady who is impeccably turned out. Giving me another glance she added: "I wouldn't have expected anything less of her husband." What a compliment, oh my, what will Tina say? When I told her she said: "One does have standards you know," and then brought me down by saying,"now you know why I could never leave you, I just couldn't face all that training again."

And you make me smile, your compliments are appreciated, thank you.

I'm familiar with quite a few of Uncle Sam's expressions, but SIXER???

I was piggy backing off of the cricket reference in your anecdote. A sixer is slang for a ball hit over the boundary in the air, resulting in six runs, the most you can score on one bowl. Perhaps it's more of an Aussie term than British.

Your story, your hat, your outfit, your panache, it's all top notch. I very much enjoy your posts. :)

Like saying in the USA, grand slam, or home run, or you knocked it out of the park.

Of course, a six for the boundary, I actually played cricket at school. You are very complimentary, it's much appreciated. But I will still be cheering for England when we face the USA in Japan next Tuesday. (It's the Rugby World Cup.)
