Based on these new guidelines or lack there of, my search for a Stetson Amon Carter OR just got a whole lot easier!

This is exactly the kind of thing why knowledgeable posters are leaving & no longer posting, to be replaced by the expertise of someone who bought their first wool hat from LL Bean a couple yrs ago. Anyone else notice Mark has quit posting for a 2nd time?

Jack, nobody is asking you to agree. There is no definitive answer, and we're all just airing our opinions.

Hell, some folks don't think it's a Stetson if it was made after 1970.

Isn’t that kind of true? I guess this speaks to the question of whether or not something is definitive or opinion. Where Stetsons made by Biltmore or Akubra actually Stetson’s?

I guess regardless most everyone would agree that pre hatco Stetson’s are higher quality ( with a few exceptions ) than post hatco Stetson’s.

Hope not to offend coming from a new guy. Just find the debate and questions interesting.

It's one of those questions with no definitive answer, only different opinions. Leo Fender sold Fender guitars in 1965. "Pre-CBS" Fenders are highly collectable but everything after is still a Fender guitar.

I'll often differentiate by calling it a 'Hatco Stetson' or just 'modern Stetson,' because they are distinctly different than their vintage counterparts.

^^^^^ This is the case with most all companies that have been around a while. Did Cadillac stop being the real Cadillac when GM bought it in 1909? I do, however, get making distinctions for classification purposes.

It’s the same with Winchester, Browning, and other storied brands. Some buyouts or mergers don’t result in substantial changes, but some leave the brand a hollow shell of what it had been.

Has anyone put a different band on their Stetson Open Road, pre or post 1970? I've got a modern 6X in silver belly and am curious about a horsehair band, something to every so slightly provide contrast.

Maybe this is an Open Road sin to do so, but before I commit such a potentially heinous act I thought I'd check here.

I have a few horsehair hat bands, and will put one on from time to time. I think if you find one that looks good on the hat and you like it, wear it. Everyone has different tastes. Good thing is you can take them off if you don’t like it.

I've never seen one like this before. My first thought was someone had cut it down, but the tag inside says otherwise. Being my size, I had to jump on it. I'm not sure when Stetson began making ORs in 4X, but this one is a lot nicer finished felt than my other 4X, which has a 2 3/4" regular sized brim, and the color has a little more grayish tone to it.

OK you OR fans, please tell me about this one. it says OR on the box but not the hat...at least, not on the sweatband or liner! Only Sovereign Stetson on the hat. Is it an OR? I don't have the hat but the pics from the seller show a gray'ish felt, traditional Cattleman's crease, thin ribbon, and a 2 3/4 raw edge. Everything on the hat (size, place of sale) and hat box (blue/gray oval box) otherwise seems to match. It has a keyhole size tag but only the size is gold and the tag itself is solid black. Sorry I don't have more pics.

I’m sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in, but If the tag says OR, I’d also assume it’s a proper OR. Raw edge though... don’t know if I’ve ever seen one with OR designation.

Weren’t OR’s always bound edge? Maybe it’s just in the wrong box or was mislabelled from the get go. I have a 50’s OR that came in the ‘original’ Knox box.

I think the gold and black keyhole tags where mostly in Canadian hats. But in the Canadian Stetson I have the outside of the tag is gold the numbers are gold and the infill colour is black.

Regardless it looks to be in nice shape from what I can see.

No.....label is on the box. Hats are often stored (and sold) in the wrong box. Based on the description of the raw edge, it is not an OR.
Would like to see more pictures of the hat and box to see if they are even from the same era as each other.......
