The perfect hat

Maybe it's just me and how I'm wired, I'm not a variety kind of guy. I like to find something I like and stick with it. My style is fairly static, mostly color changes in the same articles of clothing for example. I appreciate any good hat, and I've owned/own some hats that score very high on the hat nerd scale. But quite a few of them I hold onto for the sake of having them as opposed to wearing them regularly.

I was a collector as a teenager in the 60s/70s, and still have a box full of hats from those days that are now two sizes too small for me.

But my adult hat interests have only been for hats that I can actually wear in daily life. I have no interest in just acquiring hats for a collection, and no interest in owning vintage hats, so everything I have is recent production. I cycle through my hats based on color matching (but I haven't much changed the colors I wear, or my hair/beard, in many decades). I've got three fedoras, a couple of wool caps, a couple of Akubra country hats for hiking and such, and a straw Stetson fedora for city use that doesn't get much wear.

I've been trying to work myself up to ordering a custom hat for a while now: I want an early 30s style (light gray, high crown, wide black ribbon, medium bound brim, just a center dent), but am having trouble convincing myself where it would fit in the rotation... Yes, we all have our own unique brand of craziness!

For the record I never intended to be a collector. My interest just grew as I continued my search for the perfect daily wearer. I have downsized my collection, and may keep doing that as i see certain items never leaving the shelf. The exceptions are my old top hat and a few choice bowlers, all from about the turn of the century.

I have a collection of hats I wear, no hats not my size just to own that model. I don't wear wide ribbons so I don't own any. Got some because I wanted one of that brand in style I wear.

On the collectors side I see myself as a conservationist. If I see a rare vintage men's hat in a smaller size I might go for it just to keep it out of some milliner's or costume maker's hands.

Dunno, T. It's amazing what getting my Knox 100 did for settling down my urge to buy hats. :)
Yeah but I couldn't settle on having just one Knox 100. I'd have to buy a second one so I could have two Knox 100s! But then my wife would probably divorce me for breaking our bank account to buy them! :D

That's a very admirable attitute, Steve. Respect!

Aaron, you spoiled man ... of course that lid will satisfy your urge to buy hats. If I owned a Bugatti Royale, I wouldn't need a Toyota or VW, either :D That extreme Knox-beauty is perhaps the hat, I ever whished for the most. That said, I was very happy to see it go to a true hat-lover ;)

Personally I'm in line with the others, only buying hats that fit my head and I really like the looks of.

I too only buy hats that fit my head. Last hats I bought was because I wanted to try different quality vintage felts (Nutria/No 1/7XCB). I try to wear them all at least 1 day on a year. Now that I got a 5" brim it's getting hard to change to others. Most people might see my hats as a collection but I still don't see them as such.

Finally i´ve found the one that i want to wear all days. Is an Orion very similar to a Homburg, has a pitch in the crown, is brown and the ribbon lavender. Of course i had a lot of hats a couple of funyis ( tango hat and kind of argentine fedora) trilbys, fedoras, homburgs and a derby that i love to wear too ( in my opinion the derbys has´nt the love they deserve). My one is also very similar to the hat that wear sean Bean in the second season of Frankenstei´s Chronicles, but without the pitch in the crown. Had anyone found the one?
