Hawaiian Shirts - Aloha Shirts

This shirt is a firm favourite, the Barckcloth company in Hawaii is closing and the lady who has run it for the last thirty years, is retiring. My missus has bought a number of lengths of fabric, one of which is a mix of greens, from bright apple green to the darkest of ivory greens, but the pattern is the same as this shirt. I am reliably informed that it will be in Santa's sack. Perfect, I'm wearing a blazer, baggy trousers, spearpoint shirt & tie to a wedding next February, my new Aloha shirt will replace the spearpoint come the evening. But in the meantime I can hardly get bored with this beautiful shirt, even the weather is co-operating today.

My wife and I are leaving for London tomorrow, we are staying with her sister for a few days, which means we could miss all the Halloween shenanigans. However, our friends who own a beautiful 17th century inn have invited us to join them for their Halloween inspired: Deadly Dress Up Party. We will be home in time and to make an evening of it and we've booked a table for dinner. Tina is putting the finishing touches to her witchy outfit and I have been instructed to: "Wear that shirt!"

There will be lots of dressing up, but the shirt that Tina made, although not in an authentic tradition, still raises a smile and always a comment. I just can't make up my mind what to wear with it, although I am leaning towards my black baggy trousers and black fedora, that just leaves the shoes. Black and white patent leather spectators probably. I will put some photos up on Sunday, meanwhile here once more is my witchy shirt. And the gig.

I shall definitely have to lose weight to get into the latest shirt that Tina has made. It's for a two year old and she's in the process of making one for his four year old brother.
The first picture, taken inside Tina's cabin, shows a work in progress. The collar is only pinned on and the sleeves and hem all need finishing. The second picture is the finished work, a poor photo, but I wanted to show the strong colour.

Those two shirts are for our God-Daughter's son, the following "shirt" is for our God-Daughter's brother's new baby, her brother is also our God-Son.

Not sure if this is an Hawaiian shirt or just similar. I found the images while scanning in color slides of my Dad’s time in Korea serving our country as part of the Army Signal Corps (‘52-‘53). The funny thing is this was from a series of pics of Dad and his buddies sunning in their skivvies while in camp. The first slide showed a guy in the shirt and I thought to myself “cool shirt!” Then the next slide showed a different guy in the same shirt. A few slides later my Dad is wearing the shirt. Either they had matching shirts that were never together or this was the only shirt the entire group had. I cropped the photos to protect the descendants (and the Lounge) from seeing too many guys in tighty-whiteys.

I have a passion for Tori Richard make aloha shirts. Fortunately, a combination of technical ineptitude and a desire to spare the sensitivities of all concerned assures I shall not be modeling any. But their cotton lawn shirts are a staple in my casual summer wardrobe (Is there any longer another?) and the shirt below is a good, if more discreet example of one of their better prints.

You are right, it is a lovely print. Out of interest I looked up Tori Richard, the Aloha shirts are made of cotton lawn which is perfect for warm weather. The price range is reasonable too, going from sixty to a hundred and fifty dollars.

My shirts also come from Hawaii, well the fabric does, my wife traded with a company called Barkcloth. Alas Barkcloth are no more, the lady has retired, I shall just have to make do with what I've got. Here's an example, note the way the fabric lines up, the breast pocket all but disappears.

That's the shirt that first caught my eye. Beautiful fabric, and your wife is a fine craftswoman. Her work is as good as most professionally made versions, and better than many. Her choices in cutting it are wonderful for displaying the pattern, and the pattern matching excellent. And very difficult with such a pattern.

I find my cotton lawn shirts to be easily the coolest and most comfortable I own, a necessity for many summer days here. Tori Richard adds a proprietary very light finish, that unlike most, actually promotes wicking while reducing wrinkles, but without adding weight or stiffness to the very light and think cloth.

Very nice!! It looks like the '100 Tjgers' pattern from the 1940s. A design that's been reproduced by dozens of shirtmakers since then. Google it.

"GI Beer 15¢" Another photo of my Dad in "that shirt" (on the right) in Korea during the war. He said he chose to be a bartender so he could pour strong drinks to get the GIs drunk and hopefully keep them out of the brothels (so they didn't take something home to their wives and girlfriends). My Dad is a patriot.

This is probably sacrilege even asking as I know this type of shirt is supposed to fit lose and boxy, but if I wanted one in a slimmer fit ... where would I look?

Reyn Spooner makes a slimmer fit line I believe. Brands like Howler Bros, Hollister, and a lot of surf and skateboard brands are making these shirts now and they are often a little more modern.

There's a new shirt in the pipeline, well the shirt's new, the colour is too but I have something similar in red. Great for wearing to classic car shows. Here's a picture of the fabric and the original red shirt.
