In Tucson US Marshal Crawley Dake has offered Wyatt Earp a job as Deputy Marshal which Wyatt has turned down.

Just watched Tombstone last night. Turned on the subtitles because my hearing is getting lousy: was surprised at the amount of... er, ah, well, "rough" language that had gotten past me in previous viewings. The story is loaded quotable lines, and one of them is Doc Holliday's comment, post-shoot with Johnny Ringo, "Poor soul. You were just too high-strung. "

Not meant as a criticism of the movie because I love the movie and its story. But it is interesting to compare the actual history with its portrayal on the screen.

-- In the movie Wyatt and Virgil are at first reluctant to put on the badge again. Actually it was partially true with Wyatt but Virgil was already a deputy US Marshal at that time. Wyatt didn't really want to go back to law enforcement unless he had to or it was financially rewarding such as being Sheriff. More on that later.

-- When the Earps first arrived in Tombstone it was with their brother James who wasn't portrayed in the movie even though he took part in some of the events depicted. Morgan joined them a few months later.

-- Josephine Marcus, alias Sadie Mansfield, had been Sheriff Johnny Behan's mistress for several years before she met Wyatt Earp.

-- Town Marshal Fred White (played by Harry Carey, Jr in the movie) was not a grizzled old timer but a 31-year-old carpenter who was very well-liked but had no experience as a lawman!

-- The notorious Birdcage Theater, seen throughout the movie didn't open until December 26, 1881, two months after the Gunfight. Curly Bill Brocius killed Marshal Fred White on the site of the Birdcage Theater which hadn't been built yet.

-- During the Vendetta Ride in the movie Wyatt and his posse are killing Cowboys left and right. In the actual Vendetta Ride they only killed four; Frank Stilwell, Florentino Cruz (alias Indian Charlie), Curly Bill Brocius, and Johnny Barnes who killed Morgan Earp. Barnes was actually wounded but died from complications months later. Johnny Ringo is believed to have committed suicide in July 1882. Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday were hundreds of miles away in Colorado at the time. As they had warrants out on them for the killing of Frank Stilwell it's not very likely that they would return to Arizona to "finish the job."

-- The assassination attempt on Virgil which left him maimed for life happened on December 28, 1881. Morgan Earp was murdered a few months later on March 19, 1882, not on the same night.

-- The chain of events that led to the Gunfight stemmed from Wyatt's political ambitions. He planned to run for sheriff against Johnny Behan. It was a very lucrative job because the sheriff also served as tax collector and was entitled to 10% of the tax revenue collected. There had been a stagecoach robbery in which the driver and a passenger were killed. Wyatt saw it as an opportunity to bolster his credentials as a lawman. He envisioned a sting operation to ambush the stage robbers. Toward this end he recruited Ike Clanton as an informer promising him the $3600 reward money in exchange for Wyatt taking credit for the killing or capture of the stage robbers.

However, the scheme never came to fruition as the wanted men were killed in a gunfight with the Haslett Brothers, local ranchers who were later killed by the Cowboys in retaliation before they could claim the reward. Meanwhile Ike grew increasingly paranoid and antagonistic toward the Earps and their friend Doc Holliday fearing that his fellow Cowboys would find out about his collaboration with Wyatt, no doubt with the fate of the Haslett Brothers weighing heavily on his mind.

Things came to a head when Wyatt asked Doc Holliday, of all people, to speak to Ike and reassure him that their secret was safe. Unfortunately, given the personalities of the two men, it turned into a heated exchange! Instead of mediation, Doc had most likely interpreted his mission as that of threatening to inflict all manner of mayhem on Ike if the latter didn't stop threatening the Earps!

Historically Wyatt said that to Ike Clanton, not Johnny Ringo. The drunken confrontation actually occurred the night before the Gunfight after the altercation between Ike Clanton and Doc Holliday at the Alhambra Saloon in which Wyatt and Morgan had to separate the two. As they were leaving, Ike trailed after them and continued to spew threats and tried to challenge them to a fight.
