I'm hoping someone can help dating this Knox Panama. I think it is 50s. The brim is a bit narrow for me but I just couldn't pass on the color. I don't think it's ever been worn.

I can’t help with the date, but the “Genuine Panama” on the sweatband has me wondering. Genuine milan is wheat straw and not toquilla. I also know that “Milan” is also used the describe the weave process using many materials such as hemp. I just don’t see how it can be both Milan and a genuine Panama.

It’s a great hat regardless!

Ok, so I’m an idiot. It’s is indeed a Panama. It was listed as a Milan and I just copied and pasted the description into my database.

I started wondering if someone imported milan straw into Ecuador and wove it into panama hat.....just to confuse people.

My first Knox. Brim down:

Brim up:

2" brim, 2-3/8" ribbon with back bow, current crown height 4-1/2" at the pinch down to 3-1/2" at the rear.

And the obligatory detail photos--creased with a Teardrop so it could accommodate my head, size tag (which has come loose), tip liner logo, sweatband logo (ooh, "Premier Quality"

), paper tag behind the sweat:

Look good brim up or down. You wear these stingy brims as well as you do your larger Akubras.

This felt is firmer and smoother. It reminds me of another felt but I can't remember which it was. When I get my next hat safe I am going to put all the forties, fifties and one hundreds together and compare them.

Thank you Brent! With my other stingy brims I much prefer them with their brims up, but I like this Knox brim up or down; I think the taller crown makes a difference.

Back in 2009 Tonio asked about a similar label - I think the consensus would be definitely pre-40s, but cam we get a closer decade? Here it is on a Knox 20 bowler I picked up.
