How do folks react to your hat wearing?

E-mail is another of today's must have's that has left me behind, so my missus has an e-mail address so that I can fill in the field where it requires an e-mail. She's just printed off an e-mail from a heritage railway that we visited a couple of years ago. There is, currently on one of our TV channels, a series of programs about heritage railways and the people who run them. One of the railways featured is the one we visited a couple of years ago.

The TV show has generated a great deal of interest in heritage railways, the ones that have appeared have had their names shown in the credits, that is how viewers have come to see Tina & myself. We are in the gallery of the heritage railway and people looking up the railway have had a look at the gallery of photos. We have received many compliments about our appearance, someone even asked the railway when did they put on their vintage event? It was explained that the photos were taken of visitors enjoying their day. (us and our friends) The railway did add that it was unusual to see visitors so elegantly dressed, that's why they asked if we would pose for them. Such a fuss, who would have thought.

Today I heard: "Oh man, are you Rick Blaine, or what."
Tina and I had been to a rehearsal of a wedding that we are going to in the New Year. Tina is making the bride's dress and I have been roped in as an usher. We were all dressed up deliberately, it gave the rehearsal more accuracy and as we planned to go out tonight, it negated the need to change later. But the cold that Tina suspected that she had manifested itself today, so rather than go out, I suggested that she should wrap up warm and I will make her something to eat. She fancied tomato soup, wouldn't you know, we didn't have any. No problem, there's a supermarket about twenty or so minutes drive away.

Along with a few other provisions, I bought Tina's soup. But it's Saturday night and there's not enough staff on the checkout tills, so, reluctantly, I used the self service checkout. Two items in and it's: "Surprising item on the bagging scale." And in the most patronising voice, how I hate self service checkouts.

The young man on duty came over, pressed a few buttons, went into various menus, did this, did that and hey presto, I'm good to go. That's when he made the Rick Blaine comment. I replied by asking his age. He told me that he was 22. "Twenty-two eh?" I replied, "and how do you know about Casablanca and Humphrey Bogart?" I said. "My new girlfriend is hooked on films from that time," he replied, "and you're hooked on your new girlfriend," I said with a smile. He laughed,"something like that," he agreed. "Just out of interest," I asked, "where did your young lady get her love of old movies?" He told me that her grandparents are about my age and that they love such films, adding, "when gentlemen were gentlemen, and knew how to treat a lady." "Sounds like you've got it bad," I told him, "maybe so," he replied, "but man, there's no way that I could ever carry off the look of your hat and clothes," he then asked if he could photograph me to show his young lady, and I guess her grandparents too. So when I posed for him about half-a-dozen shoppers whipped out their phones and clicked away with him.

If you see a photo of me on social media with the caption: "I saw this nutter/throwback in the supermarket today." You can reply with a repost. And give them both barrels for me.

Perhaps we should be collecting the funny names people apply to hat-wearers? I am supposedly Clint Eastwood, Crocodile Dundee and Sherlock Holmes, all rolled into one! I'll never live up to it, and don't even own a deerstalker.

As to 'pulling-off' a particular style, I don't think anyone who's opinion I remotely cared about has ever offered an uncomplimentary comment on the topic of hats. Precious few who's opinion I disregard, for that matter. Society isn't always as judgmental as it seems.

haha, yep, I can't tell you how many times, while wearing what is obviously an Indiana Jones styled hat (larger brown fedora) I have been called Crocodile Dundee. Lessee, black vs brown, flat top vs tall pinch, big tooth band vs grosgrain ribbon . . . To some people a hat is a hat is a hat. No matter, it's all in good fun, afaic.

I... as I am sure many of you get the ‘Indiana Jones’ comments often. Which I imagine is quite understandable for many of you that are going for that look with a wider brimmed brown fedora... what blows my mind though is how often I hear Indy when wearing a Milan weave natural colored straw.

I have learned as Scotty said. To most. A hat is a hat.

Probably why we are all here... at least some place where others notice the difference. [emoji16]

I have been a hat wearing man for quite a few years. My take is the more confident you are in wearing a fedora the less people comment or even notice. I live in a small town where everyone knows each other. My dad was a fedora wearer his whole life. The best compliment I cherish is when people say I look like my dad. He died when I was 15 while we were on a family vacation in 1978. I don’t think I have ever had a negative comment but it would not bother me if I did. I don’t wear hats for any kind of fashion statement. I wear them to keep my head warm in the Winter and for sun protection in the Summer. However, I just plain enjoy wearing them!

To the topic at hand. I have never got a negative comment about my hats. Having said that, I'm my own man and don't pay too much attention as to what others say or do.

I'm going to wear them no matter what.

I had a new experience today - a double compliment: I was driving home and was stopped at a light downtown when I heard, "Hey, yo! Man! Nice car! I looked over to see a young kid in the next lane and heard cars honking behind us because the light had changed. Then he said, "Holy s..., nice hat, too!" I smiled and thanked him and drove off before we got shot. Amazing that I still get compliments about my car (a black 2007 Mustang GT with a scoop on the hood) and always nice to hear that someone appreciates my BGCD (about a 2011).

By sheer coincidence my BGCD got a compliment today as well. A younger guy at the grocery store nodded approvingly and said "solid hat."

A classic car and passengers dressed in a distinguished style get so many comments, and very favourable they are too. There's a supermarket a short drive from where we live that we use to buy fuel, they sell a premium unleaded that burns well in the old car without the need of an additive. Our car and style of dress never fails to get compliments.

Last time we were there together, my missus was enjoying the compliments about her hat and one motorist said, "the guy in the hat, he can only be your husband." To which she replied, with an impish grin and tongue firmly in cheek: "One does have standards."

While I've never received a negative comment, I'm perceptive enough to understand that sometimes people offer an "I like your hat" to me in order to break the awkwardness of their gazing.

Then there are those who genuinely do like and appreciate my hat!

Still, for reasons I can't explain, I know some folks do harbour animosity towards others who dress outside the 'norm', be it piercings, tattoos, hairstyles... and I suppose, nice hats.

Your wife must be a hoot. I'd love for her to post a few stories of her own here on the lounge! Of course, some of those might get you in trouble! Hope you are enjoying the fall weather in your part of the world.

You're from NC, as a European I'm assuming that's North Carolina and not, Negative Comments. Welcome to The Lounge, good to see someone from Wright Brother's State.

The animosity that you speak of, piercings, tattoos and so on, that's the DNA of racism. Whilst most people will have their likes and dislikes, they also know that despite their perceived intolerance of such, they also know that, there but for the grace of God.

Good, kindhearted people, don't have to sit in a wheelchair, be born of ethnic difference, worship a different deity, be sexually drawn to their own gender. Good, kindhearted people simply tolerate. Sadly such people are not only few and far between but are also the whipping boy for those who foster a different agenda.

I will have you know that Orville and Wilbur Wright were from the the Gem City, Funkytown...in other words, Dayton-by-God-Ohio. (well, Wilbur was born in Indiana, but we don't hold it against him). They are most certainly NOT from North Carolina!

Some people are uncomfortable with things that are different than what they are used to. And sometimes they feel the need to react negatively to hide their discomfort and/or reinforce that what they are ail about is the correct thing. Basically, it's insecurity of self.

What a generous compliment, thank you. You're from Tennessee, so many times we have visited your State, you won't find many Brits who know of Look Out Mountain, or Ruby Falls, what a sight it was to behold.

One of the most endearing memories was that of a lady working in an ice cream parlour in Chattanooga. She heard our English accents and started asking questions. "Is the Queen's head on all coins and bank notes?" Yes it is, and by good fortune I happened to have every single coin in my pocket which I gave her as a souvenir. She was fascinated by our paper currency that I showed her. "Why are they different dimensions? "Why are they different colours? Why do they all have a different geometric cymbals?" Simply because it's easy to identify them but it also helps the visually impaired. She thought that was a sensible idea but agreed that the green back had been in circulation for so long it would cause quite a stir if it changed. My wife and I love going off the beaten tourist trail.

Another time in Memphis, my English accent made a murder insignificant. Someone pulled a driver from his car, jumped in and drove off. The car owner wasn't having that, he pulled out his gun and fired a shot at the thief, it didn't kill him, but it did cause him to swerve into the path of an eighteen wheeler, that killed him. I didn't know what to say, so typically British, I just raised my eyebrows and said: "Really?" "You're British," he said, and started asking questions. Carjack killing, what carjack killing?
