Brilliant assessment, have to admit I know zilch about American team sports, in fact I hardly know anything about football, as in soccer, and that's an obsession in my country. But I do know this. If you want a winning team, if you want to see a team excel itself no matter what the sport, don't waste time employing a manager to run things, I mean, what do they know?

The way to get results is to put a sports journalist in charge. The journalists working for the British Press, could do it so much better, why they could not only run rings around the opposition, they could run the national team too, and in whatever team sport you care to choose. So there you have it. Now get rid of all those malingerers who have played the game, managed the game, got to close to the game and get yourself an armchair critic instead.

The Chicago Bears head coach is a seasoned offensive coordinator, however his initial phase here in town
as the Man showed his cards to the rest of the league and his play and habits are known, particularly poor
clock management and last minute vain calls where precise play is crucial. His neck in on the chopping block now
so unless he turns the team around his career will be sorely affected.

Bye the bye, when I was in college I frequently visited a Pakistani news stand here that stocked the London Times
and its sports coverage was superb. I also found his Mayfair mags very superb in altogether different ways.

Best quip I ever heard about the secret to successful coaching came from a NHL hockey coach. He said the secret was to keep the half of the players that HATED you away from the other half that were indifferent.

When I coached rep youth baseball teams I told the players after a big win...."I love it when you guys play so well." One players asked, why coach? My reply, "because when you play well it makes me look like a great coach."

Not meaning to be snide but, is that a real term? I only ask because I also once used the phrase "armchair critic," then thought to myself, "As opposed to what? A two-fisted action critic?" I'm now wondering if I came to it naturally or heard it somewhere.

I once considered the idea of writing a comic strip where Rex Reed and Pauline Kael donned skintight outfits and roamed Broadway fighting artistic crimes, but I dismissed it as ridiculous. But now I find myself rethinking the concept.

But seriously, "armchair (whatever)" dates to the late thirties -- when "armchair general" became a popular perjorative directed at self-appointed military experts who kept maps of Europe marked with little colored pins near the radio while they listened to H. V. Kaltenborn and read George Fielding Eliot. An "armchair general" would go on and on at length about what Hitler would do next, or what Stalin would do next, but who had no actual understanding of foreign affairs or military tactics beyond what he heard on the radio and read in the back pages of "Time."

The concept ultimately extended to any self-declared authority with strong opinions on subjects with which said person had no direct experience. The Internet is a hive of armchair expertise on every possible topic.

I really wish that weren’t true (regarding residential skylights). Had to replace two of four in a duplex, at considerable expense.

I’m looking into tubular skylights, aka solar tubes, which are reportedly much less expensive to purchase and install and less likely to fail, although I’ve heard contrary reports as to that latter claim.

There may be some reduction in discontent but in my experience, any penetration through a roof is going to cause problems sooner or later.

I largely rely on other people’s experience in such matters, seeing how my own is decidedly limited (and seeing how I’ve witnessed what happens when people think a little bit of knowledge is all they need; we’ve been gradually undoing the previous owner’s DIY “improvements” ever since we moved in, more than four years ago).

I am fortunate to have the counsel of my old Uncle Ray, who has owned and managed many a rental property over the past 60-plus years, and who spent much of his working life as the physical plant manager for a small school district. So even when I hire out the work, as I almost always do, I consult with him as to what to look out for. Just a few days ago he told me that all tubular skylights are not created equal, that the cheap ones are false economy. He’s had high-quality ones in his place for more than a decade now without any problems (yet, knock on wood). Neighbors who went cheap have come to regret it, he added.

There’s something to be said for jumping into challenges not quite fully prepared (after all, if not for that no one would ever have children and that would spell the end of the species), but there’s more to be said against it.

I’ve long recoiled at hearing the phrase “unskilled labor.” There are tricks to every task, and those who have mastered those skills perform the tasks much faster and much better than those who think there’s nothing to it.

In the case of the construction trades, there’s a whole lot to it. At my age, I no longer have the time nor the inclination to even consider learning what a true pro needs to know.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.
