A List of Quality Haberdashers

In another thread Besdor of Bencraft hats noted; "The sad fact is that there are very few hat stores left in the US today . Someone on the lounge should make up a list of stores. There are probably less than 2 dozen left today."

This seems right up my alley . . . So I thought I would begin the process . . .

How about it hat afficiandos? Can we compile a list of quality haberdashers still in business?

Meyer the Hatter in New Orleans is an institution.
However, they're actual hatter retired two years ago, a few months before Katrina, and they've not replaced him so they don't do any repairs.

Although they gave up their old retail location, Worth & Worth still has a showroom in mid-town Manhattan.

Great idea, Mingoslim. For those who aren't in the know, it might also be useful to provide locations for the hatters listed in this thread so that it can serve as an easy reference.

Good call on Worth & Worth -- I haven't been to their new location, but have good memories of their older establishment.

And let's not forget Batsakes in Cincinnati.

While I haven't been there in person, I know that John Helmer Haberdasher in Portland has a good reputation, as well.

Is a hat store considered a haberdasher?

A haberdasher might sell hats, but a hat shop is not necessarily a haberdasher. A haberdashery in the US frequently refers to a store selling men's accessories but, in the UK, might carry buttons, ribbons or even small home furnishings or accessories.

One complaint (from a noncustomer) re Mike the Hatter: their felt hat page doesn't make it clear, as a rule, which are fur and which wool.

Just in general, I would like online hat sites to show a picture for each color they offer. Industry terms like bark, cordova, and caribou are not as obvious as one might think.

Stuff like this inhibits comparison shopping (I dunno, you suppose that's the idea?)

John Helmer, Portland

I've been to John Helmer in Portland any number of times, and I can confirm that they are an excellent old-line haberdasher. Hats are only a portion of what they carry. They have an excellent selection of shirts, ties, suits...well, you get the idea.

If you're in Portland, don't miss this store.

Lets stick to actual hat shops . . .

Lets stick to actual hat stores for this list. Anyone can search the web for mail-order web-sites, and we all know (at least we have heard) about the fine work done by the likes of Adventurbilt and Art Fawcett . . .

But I travel from time to time on business . . . and sometimes for pleasure. So, I want to compile a list of Hat Shops and Haberdashers that one can visit. The more history the shop has, the better.

Two shops I have visited. First is John Helmer in Portland, OR has a large selection of hats and quite a nice shop, the shop is on Broadway but I don't have the exact address. They will also clean and block your hats. The second is David Wood Clothiers in Portland, ME at 75 Market Street. Not many hats but a very nice shop.

Curious - it just occurred to me that both are located in Portland, but on opposite coasts.
