This speaks to me. Unfortunately, I was taught practicality and utility because of economics. I say it was unfortunate because it also makes it difficult to enjoy something, even practical and utilitarian things, without guilt and questioning. On the flip and positive side, which I appreciate more the older I get, it set the foundation for minimalist comfort. That's too wordy. What I'm saying is that it sucks to not be able to enjoy something free and clear of negative internal dialogue, but I do love minimalism and have little problem NOT obtaining things that I think are cool. I've come to nearly hate owning things. It's still a great pleasure to research, and if I let things rest long enough, I lose any desire to own them. Appreciate from afar. Nevertheless, from baseball cards to comic books to X, Y, and Z, I've always had something in particular to occupy my time and thoughts. You know, hobbies. I'm baffled by people who have no hobbies but making money/career/working. They seem to have no curiosity or fascinations. My curiosity and fascination is endless.

I'll get a bunch of something, learn about it until there is a high level of satisfaction, dump most of it, and move onto the next thing. I'm obsessive, but the physical remnants of those obsessions aren't something you'll find in my belongings.

Video-games used to be all I ever care about but nowadays, I can barely even stand the medium. But my turning point, where I stopped playing games was Silent Hill 2. I'd play just about anything until that game. Once I finished it, deep down I somehow knew or felt that this was it for me as far as video games go. And it was. I tried to get into so many series later on, Dark Souls too and even though I liked it, I'd just never again pick up a game once I closed it the first time. Sad, really...

I am addicted to tobacco. I smoke two cigars, half a pack of cigarettes and sometimes a bowl or two every day. I don't really collect pipes but I do need a few pipes given my heavy smoking habit. I did buy limited edition cigars but sold most of them after 10 years to buy new ones to smoke. So I am not a collector of cigars either. Just an addiction.

I may be considered a collector of repro jeans because a few years ago I started buying lots of late 1800s to early 1900s style repro jeans (don't have money for the real deal) that I don't really wear (most are sitting in my closet unworn because they are not very practical with suspender buttons, no belt loop and a pin cinchback that will likely destroy the lower back of leather jackets). I have slowed down but I have not sold any, so there is still a collection of Duck Digger, Heller's Cafe, LVC, Lee Archives etc in my closet unworn.

I may also be considered being obsessed over footwear. On average, I buy at least one pair of footwear every month or so.

Heheh thanks, i love to play turn based strategy games, i play the most common ones like chess, and stratego, but i love jagged alliance 2 v1.13, front mission series, and silent storm. So that boardgame is something like that, action point based and customable inventory so player can bring different weapon and items to fit their playstyle plan, custom ruler to check weapon range, and dice for a chance of a miss or extra damage roll.
I also play through emulator old games from super nintendo era or ps1, new games are too heavy into graphic over gameplay
More and more like semi interactive movie, so i rather watch other people play through youtube or twitch

I feel the same way, i have many interests, read alot about each, buy few sample, or trying to make some but not necessarilly collecting, once satisfied or distracted by a new interest i would put them all in boxes and move on.
As long as it is not something i make myself i would periodically dump or give away those boxes of old interests i cant imagine to revisit. comic books, cds, games cds and consoles, toys.
So over time i learn not to buy and rather save pictures of those things my eyes desire and read what other people say about it, much easier to manage and mostly free.

I realize the point of game console is to play fighting games with friends sitting next to you, not playing against strangers online.... totally not the same, i lose interest in playing big sandbox game since i cant stop playing and would spend / waste too much time on it levelling up and stuff, so ended up watching longplays while working

Agreed. Plus I'm a very sore loser and can't stand the thought of some dumbass kid kicking my ass in any video game so I rather not play online. My friend is really into competitive online gaming and he's constantly whining about the same thing, how he lost to some toxic little brat. I keep telling him, dude, you're like 40, let it go but he just can't.
Sandbox I like but those horrible stories and dialogues... It's like video game industry decided to altogether ban anything resembling good writing.

I don't have any addictions or collecting habits, thankfully.

Do you focus on a style say workwear boots, or do you go across the range?

Yeah, I don't like triple A games, they are just too "standard" and bland for lack of a better word. And agreed about game writing.

Diecast WW2 airplanes. Have a nice highly detailed Matchbox Collectibles collection. Hobby Master, Gemini Aces and Corgi to name a few.
Also some rare Sc-fi collectibles... display models etc.

Boots, shoes, sneakers. I lost count of how many I have. A rough count at the office alone comes close to 50 pairs of footwear and that is just the ones I left at the office. I think I have triple that at home.

That is another rabbit hole indeed, have a lot of shoes from my "fashion" days, but now I see that the construction on these is not great... So trying to get a few great pairs of different style from workwear to formal

The title of the thread reads, in part, obsess over. You don't need a collection to be an obsessive, not that I am, of course. I have a classic car, but only one, that's not obsessive, is it?

My car does tend to draw lots of attention, but really, that's not me being obsessive, is it?

And when a media company wants to drape a few models over the car, surely you can't say that I'm obsessive, can you?


And if the MG Car Club of Germany wants to use one of those models, posing in black & white sepia, over my car for MG Kurier.........

And when the Borough of Poole in Dorset want to promote their Poole Goes Vintage event, not my fault if they use my classic MG, is it?

Classic cars on the prom were looking for a fresh image for their 2015 'flyer.' Not my fault that they fell for my old MG

Seeing Classics on the Prom, Crotch Cooler, so called because vintage cars did just that, rather fancied putting an artist's impression on their brochure of me and my car. How can that be an obsession?

Now you might happen to be an artist, and if you live in Dorset and spy an old MG in your supermarket car park, you might just photograph it for future use.

Then again, if that artist were to fall in love with an old MG and depict it from a time when it was relatively new, that's not really obsessive, is it?

You would be excused if you thought that a media company might use an old MG, in black & white, using the obligatory attractive model, was obsessive about the car's marque.

It's rather fortunate that I don't obsess over MG's because I'm only allowed ten pictures per post and you might get bored with all the other photos that I have. Obsessive, me? Perish the thought.

I've had varied interests over the years but find one thing in common. Once I find a forum with like minded individuals, the acquisition phase takes root.

My first forum was MTBR (Mountain Bike Resource). I started mountain biking in the early 90's. By the late 90's, I'd owned several bikes but finally built up a nice Titanium framed dream bike, spending hours researching frames, makers, components, etc. Road bikes came some years later.

That pattern of researching a hobby/interest and spending money repeated itself over the years. Most my interests were gear-heavy. On and off road cycling, backpacking and hiking, photography, custom knives, watches, Goodyear welted shoes and boots. Whatever the interest, I sought out the "best" using whatever metric I thought appropriate based on research at enthusiast forums. The more time I spent on the forums, the more I coveted and subsequently acquired. We are fortunate to have the means for my interests which have never caused issues aside from the frequent eye-roll by my wife and the occasional storage problem.

I've been on a menswear kick (including workwear, leather jackets, denim, tailored clothing, etc.) for 15-20 years now. I have more shoes and boots by Alden, Edward Green, C&J, RMW, Viberg, etc. than I can ever wear out in my lifetime. I've also had a thing for outerwear. In addition to leather, I own way too many waxed cotton jackets (Barbour, Belfast), pea coats, wool chore jackets (Private White VC are my favorite) and more than a few tailored sportcoats for the work week.

I implemented a one-in one out policy about five years ago. It applies to shoes, watches, bikes and even jackets. It works about half the time. Truth be told, I could purge half my belongings and still have more than I ever need.While I truly enjoy my "things", I have to admit that the obsession lies with the search.

Nice classic cars, bikes, guns and knives. I did obsess over those at one point in time without really getting into them. Would have love to collect those but it is impossible to do so where I live.
Had a few guns and bowie knives when I was living in the States but had to sell them when I moved. They are all illegal here.
Classic cars is a no no here as well because the cost of keeping cars that you don't get to drive is way too high.

Interesting concept. I’m certainly obsessive about things, but I don’t need to own, hold, or control them. And I don’t need to own the best that the world has to offer. I’ve loved leather jackets since my teen years and I’ve always had one or two in my closet. Currently I have a couple of Aeros and that is probably enough, but I still enjoy looking at, and reading about, all of these high-end brands on this forum, which I check out often. Other obsessions are Triumph motorcycles (have always had one in my garage, currently a 2017 T120); bicycles (own a mid-level road bike and cobbled together 29er mountain bike); audio equipment (all pedestrian but decent). I’ve always been somewhat limited financially so maybe that has kept my obsessions in check. Also I see the world from a utilitarian perspective and find excessiveness to be absurd and exhausting. I have been obsessed about my work for 25 years to the point of being a narcissistic jerk at times. I’m a furniture maker and woodworker. Probably nothing special about this line of work versus others but there is a lot to obsess about with it - designs, machines, processes, materials, shop space, means of selling work. As I get older my obsessions about it are fading, thankfully.
