Two hats showed up yesterday and one was supposed to be a Stetson Bowler with a VERY tall top. I open up the box and there's a 7 1/4 black Royal Stetson, all right, but not exactly what I was expecting.

It has the plastic liner in the top (the wet head is dead!) so who knows how old it is. It's a perfect fit and is in really nice shape so looks like I have another fedora.

Good old DangerBay, it's really tough on the paycheck.
I heard from the seller, his wife pushed up the center dent on that fedora for the listing which is what made it look like a cross between a bowler and a top hat.
Camera angles always seem to be misleading, too.
Oh well, a really nice hat which was totally unexpected.

Some pictures of the interior and and any labels behind the sweatband should give some clues on age.

There's a serial number 14778, a United Hatters Caps and Millnery Workers union stamping under the sweat band, a Royal Stetson stamping on the outside and the beaver and griffin bit under the plastic top liner.

Thanks Hector... this Marathon looks like the twin of one Stefan has. Looking forward to getting it in hand.

Some people look down on those brands, not me. Some of those hats are better quality than modern day offerings.

Looking forward to your review.

If anybody is looking down on Marathons, they don't know much.

I agree with Jim.... Marathon hats are very nice hats... and I know for some they are fairly sought after. I believe most are made by Lee. The one Lee I have is wonderful..... and this Marathon has GILLS!

The Keith while definitely a name I had never heard of looks to be a fairly nice hat. With wind trolley and all. It is however yet another black hat

My joke was really based on the fact that my collection of black hats has grown from just one beautiful Disney that I did not wear nearly enough... to now 8 (9 if we count the cheap forever 21 hat that arrived with a couple others) in just three months. So this was most definitely a conversation that needed to be had in my head. [emoji23]

Just because it has gills, don't think you can swim in it.

Keith hats are made by Lion Hats, I believe. There are a couple other brands in their stable, and if my memory serves me, evolved into Beaver Brand.

Pretty sure we have a Keith or Lion thread laying around here, somewhere.

Haha.. thanks... I’ll try to heed that advice [emoji28]

Will def look into those brands... don’t think you go too far wrong in a Beaver Brand predecessor... even if it’s still another black hat [emoji846][emoji854]

Beaver Brand Hat Co. was huge, considering St. Louis was regarded as the fur capital of the United States into the mid 1900's.

Nothing wrong with a black hat[emoji275] Either that or a brown or gray, lol.....

I just grabbed this Montecristi Custom Hat Works. It's way too large for me if the listing is correct. But with a BIN of $31 I couldn't let it go. I don't know if I'll be able to do anything with it to make it wearable for me. I figured worst case - it will make a good gift.

So this arrived Thursday and I opened it today. It is the largest hat I have ever seen. The opening is 8 1/2" by 7 3/8". So that should make it a 8 or 8 1/8 size. I put it on my head and even with my ears tucked inside it's way too big. Looks like they had to add a piece of sweatband to make it large enough. But it is a nice hat. The brim is 4" and the crown is 5" at the front.
