Stetson Open Road 3X this morning. Not all Open Roads are equal! Stetson introduced the "Open Road" in 1946. The thin ribbon high block styled hats had been around for some time.

This 3X has that desirable felt - clay like ability to take a crease over and over again. I can pop it on and change the crease easily on my head. Very organic trait. This hat is a strong argument for vintage felted fedoras.

Best, Eric -
Great Eric! I can feel how malleable this thing is from my screen ;) I had the impression that the Royal de luxe OR (of the same period) were softer than the 3x ones, no?

To quote another relative, my late Uncle Sam, MIT 1933, aerodynamic engineering; "Good enough is best."
He never worked for the likes of Rolls Royce, Etc. And, although he or his brothers could afford ANY car they wanted (from their used car/truck parts business) he drove Ford LTDs, his brother (Maxie) always drove a Checker (Maxie's Taxi, of course) but also owned a Rolls', a Cord, A Duesy, etc.

Back to hats...
Eric (@Short Balding Guy) mentioned GILLS!!
Stephan L. Stetson did them well, too!

Thanks very much.

I respectfully believe that Art Fawcett (VS Hats) has an edge, produced by years of experience on Gannon. Michael Gannon has the time to become the best gill hat artist. IMO, he is on the way. With Art retiring shortly the gill story will continue to be written.

Art Fawcett VS gill examples here:

Ahhhhh, gills!

After some work reading I headed out in a cap.

Home this evening walking the yard with my dog in a Gannon "Executive." This was inspired by an Adam Executive Quality Pacesetter. The natural felt hides the sleaty snow mix that is falling tonight.

A most excellent argument Eric, supported by a beautiful example.
3X really meant something back in that day, as did 7X. One only needs to pet a moment to understand.
You can’t get those at the mall!
