Oh, so that's one of those coffin box hats! I always wondered about those.

Funny, the box doesn't look that old :(

Yes, there's a hat in there:

Apparently I bought a pancake slouch hat:

This one's going to take a little work, but the redeeming grace is that this might be bluegrass green and not grey as was listed. I'm seeing hints of green and when I popped it out to quasi-open crown a cloud of dust poofed up in the air. I have a sneaky suspicion it is BG just caked with dust.

Max, I'm glad you like the Collins & Fairbanks. If I weren't thinning the herd to '1' - say '2' instead - it would stay.

I wish all ebayers could be as easy and pleasant to deal with as you are.
Thank you, Scott!
I wish all eBay sellers had hats as good as yours.

Thanks Max. I used to love scouring ebay for hats - some of my most amazing finds came there, and your heather Stevens is an amazing example of what you can get lucky with. But these days I use different sources, meaning that in most cases I get to hold each hat and examine thoroughly before purchasing. It allows me to avoid ever having to get rid of a bad hat. Unfortunately I only acquire ten or so hats each year, but they are all great ones.

Well, as much as I like Bond, who I have done business with, he is from Milwaukee, which smells funny on its own.
Oh, c'mon. Beer, sausage, cheese...it's not that bad.

I drive through Milwaukee when I go home to visit my folks and Gary, IN (also along the way) is 10X worse. Welcome to Gary, first you smell it and then you see it.

Is it a CD?

Not a CD but a Squatter Featherweight, so less crown with a bit of taper, wider ribbon, and I think a slightly smaller dimensional brim. It's an older Australian market version of the Squatter which seems to be less common. The designation is Superfine as opposed to Imperial or Heritage. The felt is indeed softer and more pliable than my Cockatoo. The hat also is unlined, with just a tip sticker. More details to come after it comes out of the freezer.

Yes, many, many moons ago, my wife and I stayed in a rather dodgy motel in Hammond.

Don't look at me like that, we had a coupon!

Boy, in retrospect, staying there (and that going to that burrito joint down the street in the middle of the night) was some combination of ballsy, stupid, and naive. But the Jerry Garcia show we went up to Chicago to see was good!
