Hello & welcome to Garden with Robert Burns. Aye, it's Robbie burns' day today. I have always been privileged, or maybe it is he who is privileged, clarity has been disolved in the mists of time & our destinies have become intertwined.......where was I ? oh yes.....I have been privileged to share a birthday with our kilted friend ever since I was born & even before & on this special day of the year I like to reel off a few of the Caledonian Baird's verses but this year is a little different. For not only am I on the threshold of my 7th decade on this god sodden planet, spring has arrived early this winter (Thankyou Ameriky) & I'm in full gardening mode. So what better way to celebrate the end of the world as we know it than with a little gardening ditty by Robbie.

THE GARD'NER WI' HIS PAIDLE.

When rosy May comes in wi' flowers,
To deck her gay, green, spreading bowers;
Then busy, busy are his hours,
The Gard'ner wi' his paidle.

The chrystal waters gently fa';
The merry birds are lovers a';
The scented breezes round him blaw
The Gard'ner wi' his paidle.

When purple morning starts the hare
To steal upon her early fare;
Then thro' the dews he maun repair,
The Gard'ner wi' his paidle.

When day, expiring in the west,
The curtain draws of Nature's rest;
He flies to her arms he lo'es the best,
The Gard'ner wi' his paidle.

Happy Burns' night to all who celebrate it.

Happy Birthday, L&M! You have reached a milestone that I aspire to in the (not too) distant future. ('Tis nearer than I ever thought possible.) I wish you all the best and many happy returns! As for Ol' Robbie... I have one of his poems flagged in my great, thick book of the Romantic Poets that I've been draggin' around with me for nigh on thirty years, and ---now that I look at it--- it seems uncannily appropriate for this auspicious occasion:

An' now, auld Cloots, I ken ye're thinkin'
A certain Bardie's rantin', drinkin'
some luckless hour will send him linkin'
to your black pit;
But, faith! he'll turn a corner jinkin',
an' cheat you yet!

Love that little snippet. I sometimes toss it out to confuse my adversaries and baffle my friends.

Wishing both you and Robbie the happiest of birthdays!

We thank you for your belated birthday wishes but I hope you ain't confusing entering one's 7th decade with being 70. " 'cause there's certain things my vanity won't abide." :)
