Today’s arrival:
A sweet 2 3/4 brim, 4 5/8 crown, 1 3/4 ribbon, late ‘50s Dobbs in a style close enough to a Hanover Square that’ll fulfill my need for that name plate , or Whippet. Love it even more! Somehow. View attachment 214009 View attachment 214010 View attachment 214008

Killin' it today, Randall! Kind of now wish I bought that Cavanagh at the same time as the Borsalino.

Super hat Steve with a great history behind it.

Weren't Möckel the original makers of what became known as the Homburg? The future Edward VII of England making them more known outside of Germany. The liner refers to that with it's reference to the royal families of Germany and England.

It's reference to the kaiser surely makes it around WWI and quite possibly before.

Its shape in your photos makes it look more like a Bowler than the "Homburg" style originally sported back in the 1880s.

It looks in excellent condition, too. A beautiful hat for any collection.
Steve, Thanks! Yes you are correct! Stefan was just 3 minutes ahead.

This is an original Möckel Stiff Felt. Möckel went out of business in the early 1930s. The brand was used later by distributors. I have never seen an original Möckel Homburg style hat but I am always looking. I have only seen / handled one Soft Felt Möckel and it was this Velour from the
Gotisches Haus Bad Homburg collection.

Thanks! You saw that BIN auction? The seller had it listed as a wool hat! There were 23 watchers by the time I found it.
Yes, I saw both within the first 5-10 minutes of being listed. Just happened to be one of those right place right time situations because I had watched a different auction end. I immediately sent the seller a question about the Borsalino, waited maybe 10 minutes for a response, and just went ahead and BIN'd it without hearing back. I was afraid someone was going to scoop it up. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was a 2-3/4" brim when it arrived.

I don't remember how much time elapsed before I circled back on that Cavanagh again, but by the time I did it was gone. Glad to see you got it. :)

I took a few shots and posted some info in the Borsalino Brotherhood thread before putting it in the freezer. I'll be pulling it out tonight before going to bed. Definitely will be wearing it some time this week.

I'm pretty sure I also ended up with another hat you referenced several days ago as well. Something blue...

Man! You’re lucky I forgot about that one! That’s funny. Well, I’m glad you got it. So how did it turn out?
I’ll go check out your Borsa.

Needs a good brushing but quite solid overall. The felt is more easily workable than a 50s Cavanagh midnite hommie I have. I can easily put in some dents if I want with this one, something that would require steam on the Cavanagh. I'll probably end up doing a side by side compare/contrast of the two down the line.

There should be several days of sunshine this week after tonight's storm blows through, so hopefully I can get some shots with natural light to appreciate the color. I also have found some preliminary info on the hat shop. I like these house label hats and digging up history on them.
