Today marks the 105th anniversary of the death of Alexander Franklin James. Frank had a fear of being exhumed by grave robbers after death. Crematoriums were new at the time & the nearest one was in St. Louis, MO. His body was secretly shipped by train to St. Louis & his cremains were kept in a bank safety deposit box for 29 yrs until the death of his wife Annie. They are together now in her family's cemetery. RIP Frank.

I’ve always enjoyed the stories of Frank James time in Huntsville when he was tried for a Federal payroll robbery the James Gang was accused of committing in Muscle Shoals, AL. Even though he had been granted clemency in MO, he still had to answer to the Federal charges.

Stories indicate he was greeted as an immediate celebrity and locals could check him out of jail on day passes. He seemed to have some local heavy hitters defending him.

The payroll robbery was most likely carried out by Jesse, Wood Hite & William Ryan. Frank was living in Nashville under an alias. By April 1882 both Wood Hite & Jesse would be dead; Bill Ryan was serving time in prison in MO.

After all his trials & acquittals Frank James for a time lived in St. Louis & worked as the doorman at a burlesque theater. I've always assumed that is when he learned about cremation & the crematorium.

Hope they have a spare tire. Check out the hat crease on the fellow on the porch (above). He looks familiar ...

No hatted pictures of the good general Walker and by some accounts he was more successful as an attorney than a soldier. He is buried in Maple Hill Cemetery. His former home survives to this day in the Twickenham Historical District.

Every time I've looked at this thread this week that portrait of General Walker has reminded me of the actor, Danial Day Lewis. Today I scroll down the page and see whom? Weird.
