Mangold is a fantastic director. Excited for this. Though I’d honestly prefer to see a 1930’s Indiana Jones flick with Chris Pine as the lead.

"According to a source close to the filmmaker, the decision to leave the director’s chair was entirely Spielberg’s, in a desire to pass along Indy’s whip to a new generation to bring their perspective to the story." Translation: Spielberg doesn't want to have to deal with Disney's constant and misguided interference so he's backing out while he can.

I've been thinking for a while that it's probably inevitable that both Spielberg and Ford will eventually leave the franchise for reasons of age and a changing movie world as much as anything else.

They need to kill off Indiana Jones, just like they did Han Solo. Have him fall off an old rope bridge spanning a deep gorge.
Then pass the hat to a younger actor to continue whatever story is left to tell.

I'm surprised that's not what they're doing, really. The big target market for this is, after all, less old farts like us and more the young kids and their pocket money. I'd anticipated they'd have an older Ford in there to bookend / narrate / whatever in order to pull in past fans (see: Shatner's appearance in Star Trek Generations, or Nimoy's in Star Trek).

WE'll see where we go. George Lucas having minimal involvement is an automatic bonus: he's had some great ideas over the years, but he can't write or direct. I'm also rather encouraged by Spielberg jumping out of the director's chair too, as I don't rate the vast majority of what he's done over the years, tbh.

I wonder if Karl Urban could satisfy everyone by pulling off as good an imitation of Ford as he did Deforrest Kelly. At least, though, we're not going to be sitting through two hours of trash with that guy that did the Solo picture. I had a notion that if that had been a hit, Disney would have looked to him as a logical replacement for ford in the Indy role too. As it is, I hear the poor reception of Solo led to the cancellation of a pencilled in trilogy (of which it was to be the first part).

With a reboot they could start from scratch - 1930, say. But in today's post-colonized world, with its understandable but sometimes tiresome sensitivities, it would be hard to tell a story with native peoples or specific ethnic groups as bad guys or gormless victims, let alone showcase a white guy robbing a developing nation of valuable treasures. A viable script would have to walk a fine line and with Disney's own hang ups thrown in would probably be unwatchable to anyone over 15. And I can't imagine too many kids being interested in the material to be honest.

Good points Edward. You're right about Lucas and Spielberg. I've often found Mr S's works sentimental and lacking in texture - Raiders a work of brilliance, however. Lucas' output I have almost never enjoyed - he's very lucky to have invented a quasi-religion and never need to work again.

Exactly so. Lucas' core problem is that he doesn't understand how humans work, no matter how good he is at designing video games. Spielberg has made some great films over the years, I'll give him that, but the vast majority of his output is far too heavy on the schmaltz for me. I love the Indy films, but I think it has come time for someone to do something better. I still have al ot of affection for Temple, however unfashionable that might be. A lot of the subtleties of Indy's relationship with Shortround - the way he treats him as an adult not a kid, and yet in some ways behaves himself like a big kid around the kid.... that's a theme that's interesting, but gets a bit lost in the "Hey, kids, here's a kid for you to want to be!" Disneyesque side of it. I'd like to have seen that better explored by a more talented director. (It also has a place in the later films' exploration of Indy first as son and then father in Crusade and Skull respectively.)
